Even so, it's very similar to how the old RX-7 turbo setup worked (if I remember correctly), so there has to be some new innovation involved here for a patent to be valid.
An alternative interpretation of the schematic is that each different-sized turbo is powered simultaneously, with one cylinder 'group' supplying input to one turbo each and output directed to the plenum. An actuated diverter would be used to siphon output from one turbo into the other, larger turbo. That might provide a smoother power band? Not sure - the leaders and flow-annotations aren't very clear to me (A/C hydraulics and air flow are apparently not treated similarly in schematics).

I still prefer a smaller TT V8 over the TT V6/I6, a 3.8-4.0L light weight small V8 TT(like the McLaren MP4-12C) will be the best engine for F30/F32 M3/M4!

For those still complaining about "breaking M tradition" because this will be turbo, please, go look up what the powerplant is for the E30 M3. The original M3.
Let's see, I believe it was turbo.. Well shit, it was a 4 banger as well. M division has always been about innovation and new technology. If you want classic and heritage, go buy a 911. I can't say that the idea of a V6 makes me super happy, but Nissan changed the new GT-R to a V6 from an I6, and now makes a car blisteringly fast. Just like the 1M, regardless of what powers it, or what it's called, nobody is going to question it once they drive it. I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for 2013. |

Wow
Disappointed if this turns into truth. The "latest" craze with turbo charging is based on power and fuel efficiency. Look at the M3's real racing comp. Any turbos? Anyone? ALMS non prototype? Real GT series cars? Anyone?
I believe in win on Sunday sell on Monday. Use the engineering team you have BMW, direct inject the V8 and build a street version of your race car. If your paying 60~80k for a street version of the race cars you watch on TV, who gives a shit about 16~20mpg versus 23~27mpg. Does Porsche care what the GT3 mileage really is? Corvette? Sorry for ranting, but like I said, a little disappointed. Drifting doesn't count as racing so don't bash me with the GT-R card. |

I still think they come along with a souped up N54/55 R6. But that's wishful thinking.
