We should crowd source/fund the next M3/4 engine... Maybe we all could chip in and make a better V8 or something...

F1 engine costs roughly 6.7 million dollars
I assume BMW isn't spending that kind of money on the m4 engine

You mean the same M engineers who made the M5?
Loses about 11% of power after a few laps
Which means after say 10 laps
This super duper turboed engine will be puting out less power than the S65 in the E92 engine

In some ways this asks more questions than it answers. So many details abourt the production car are missing, so the details of the DTM cars are even further shrouded.

There's not much mystery to it though, really. DTM regulates everything from engine size and type to chassis construction to vehicle weight. Don't expect the aesthetic to change much either as they have finely honed the current car through hours and hours of testing. You'll see the new headlights and tail lights, sure, but probably not much else.

As far as I know (and I admit that I'm no expert), there is no or at best almost no overlap between a DTM car and the production car it is supposed to represent. I doubt an "M4" DTM would use a production-based tub (if the rules even allow such a thing), or a six cylinder turbo (again, if the rules even allow such a thing).

BMW could (probably will) simply re-skin the existing racers to create an "M4 DTM."

Edit: I did some cursory research, and it looks like many aspects of the car (electronics, brakes, gearbox) are standardized across all entrants. http://www.dtm.com/en/Technical-Regulations.html Currently, the series requires 4 liter V8 power, but that will apparently change in 2016, when the series will shift to 4 cylinder turbo power. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/107154

So the point stands that the "M4 DTM" is basically a silhouette racer.

Very curious what engine will be powering this. It will absolutely not be a derivation of the S55.

This will cause them to lose the races initially unless the turbo engines are rock solid. But it will gain them more respect from race fans to run production based turbo engines that they sell rather then run engines that are not on sale anymore.

Well see how it turns out. I am hoping BMW does not pull out from ALMS, GrandAM, Continental, due to fears of losing due to lack of development they have done with there turbo engines in last 7 years. As they stuck with NA engine from M3 for racing.

I think all of us would love to see the new M3/M4 power plant racing in all series to keep the tradition rolling.

The engine will be the P66 as found in the current car. Virtually everything will carry over. The change to M4 will be more about symbolism than advancing the state of the art in spec racing.

Even in the new United Sports Car Racing series (ALMS and Grand Am merger) which will be in its second season by the time an M4 could be readied, I am skeptical that we will see an S55-derived engine soon. I'm sure we'll see the F8x chassis there sooner than later though.

We probably never will. By the time R&D and the sheer required test hours are finally accomplished, DTM will be switching to 2L turbos. It makes sense to use the P66 until then.
