Service Bulletin: M4 produced March-July 2014: CAN Terminating Resistor: SIB 61 24 14

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Folks, so the resistor is missing on these vehicles and it creates various issues. Supposedly, after this fix, DCT performs better and exhaust is louder, as reported by 2 owners in this thread. There is no relevant SIB for F80. Looks like M3s are unaffected.

SIB 61-24-14
September 2014

Service Action: Install Missing CAN Terminating Resistor
F82

SITUATION
The general electrical system functions fail to operate properly. Various erroneous fault codes are stored throughout the vehicle.

CAUSE
The CAN (Controller Area Network) terminating resistor is missing from the vehicle wiring harness near the EKPS (Electric Fuel Pump Control) module.

CORRECTION
Install the missing CAN terminating resistor.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 4 Series Coupes produced from March 2014 to July 2014.

First check if a Service Action label with a code number 703 is already attached to the B-pillar.

If a code number 703 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is necessary.

Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in the "Service Menu"

How critical is this? Is it something that needs to be done soon or is it something that can wait?

If you don't see the 703 number, visit the dealer to have the resistor installed.

No, not iDrive... just open the driver's door and look at the pillar where the stickers are.

Why do you want an aftermarket company to fix an OEM SIB?

Sounds like he doesn't want to get flagged for the mods he has on his car.

If you need the mod you should do it unless you prefer to have your eighty thousand dollar car performing in a substandard way.

It makes a great deal of difference in the cars driving character.

I really wouldn't worry about removing your mods. The dealerships won't void your warranty or "flag" your car unless the mods contributed to the failure of the vehicle. This being a service bulletin, you wouldn't have that problem.

I had the CAN terminator recall performed on my car at my 1200 mile service three weeks ago. It made absolutely no noticeable difference in the way my car drives or sounds.

My service advisor called me the other day and told me about this. He mentioned nothing about it having any effect on the exhaust note and the dct. I'm very happy to hear that the dct will get updated as well with this. It's been acting a little funny lately. Could this also be a result as to why my "M" doesn't light up in my driver seat??

Any experts chime in and tell me how this CAN resistor would affect the exhaust note?

I had this done last week and I can confirm the car definitely drives better after this service is performed. I actually felt a noticeable difference right after picking up the car but thought it was in my head.

As for the exhaust, I can't really say, as I had an M performance exhaust installed at the same time.
