I won't be getting exec package but hoping I can twist an arm to get just the hud in the M4 as its going to be needed and utilized extensively if all goes to plan.
Is that a possibility to get it as stand alone?

Pat
Yes. The same way polarized glasses block out light, the HUD uses a specific piece of plastic in the windshield to build the display from the projection. Take two pairs of polarized sunglasses.. rotate one 90 degrees and watch most of the light be blocked out... that is what is happening with the HUD... the polarization fields are not aligned so light on it is limited.... Don't feel bad, I cant fly with polarized lenses for the same reason, but there are plenty of world class, non-polarized sunglasses out there.

The HUD should not be in your line of sight, per se... it should sit above the dash, but below the visible front end of the car. In other words the hood is that back drop for the HUD, not the road. It's main purpose is to keep your eyes and peripheral vision higher up where you can catch changes in road or vehicles ahead of you more quickly. By displaying most pertinent driving information (to include speed limits, which a camera reads and then displays for you, love that feature), in one central location, just below your direct driving sight line, you can quickly reference needed data and spend more time looking where you are going.

you ordering an M3/M4 as well?
Sat in the M3 yesterday, and looked at the M4 at the Dallas Autoshow. I think I am going to keep with the M5s. I think Dr.Jeff captured my thoughts on it perfectly in this post: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...9&postcount=81

I think the F80 is definitely a step up from the E9X ///Ms. If I were to track more often, I definitely would consider getting one, but I'm a lowly govt employee and cant afford both it and an M5. My wife much prefers her x-drive to speed.

The one thing I will say... I highly recommend sitting in the seats. They are much different from the F30 seats, the E90 //M seats, or the F10 M5 seats. They really kind of felt like my old E30 Recaro seats. If you are much over about 200lbs (Im 6'00" and 200lb) they might feel tight. Of course this was at a car show where every 5 year old pushed every single button so YMMV.

Cheers.

Must have, I would probably be buying an m235i by now if the M4 didn't have a sport HUD offered

The wife's X5 has HUD and it actually is really nice. Yes is sucks that Polarized Sunglasses makes the HUD almost inadvisable but so does 1/2 the LCD displays in my car. Here are the advantages that our family likes with the HUD. These may be weak examples but they are beneficial to our use.

1) It greatly reduces the amount of looking down at the gauges for speed reference. Like some of you out there, We have a tendency to drive faster than the speed limit on main roads and highways (NEVER SPEED IN NEIGHBORHOODS) Having the HUD actually makes us slow down a bit because it is more obvious.

2) When Using the navigation, it is nice because the Nav screen always displays the map and the HUD displays your distance and arrows to next turn. This is really useful on road trips with the kids. They are always asking how far/how long till we get to point X, usually I simply state what is in the HUD.

3) Warning messages. We all know the feeling when the dreaded "BMW BING" occurs. Messages are displayed in the HUD which prevents you from having to start frantically looking down for what the message is and you can easily evaluate what the message is and react accordingly. This may be trivial but when your doing 80mph on the Highway and the error message appears, there is less eyes off the road.

That scares me. What if your windshield cracks and you have to replace it? I'm not sure it will be covered by warranty and it may be quite costly.

Great question, never thought about it but I would imagine it will be covered.

It is expensive, and coverage depends on your insurer.

I for one has only had 1 window crack(back in high school) and the then 1-2 rock chips which I had filled w/ no issue. 21 years of driving and 1 cracked window. To me those are pretty good odds. If your one who has had many broken windshields the. It may be a concern.

I had a head-up display in my old C6 and after a few months, when the novelty had worn off, I found it distracting and disabled it.

What do others think? Have you used one before? Do you like it?
Also comfort access after 4 cars with don't think I could do without

I like the antique HUD on the E60 M5. The F8x M has color and more detail. I want it, so I don't have to take my eyes off the road to see the instruments.

At the time, I thought, "I can never live without HUD ever again." After I got my C63, I have yet to find myself missing it.

So in a nutshell, yes it is pretty cool. Especially when you're using the navigation system. However, when you're in a performance-driven car such as the M3/M4, the driving experience itself should keep you happy enough.

My 2 cents.
You're a Merc fan ... Merc doesn't have the equivalent of M's sport HUD, does it?

I'm a fan of BMW and Mercedes. And Porsche. And anything that I enjoy driving.

And on the W204 C63, there is no HUD.

On the W205 C-Class (including the W205 C63), HUD will be available.

I've actually gotten a sneak peek at MB's new HUD and it could prove to be very versatile/configurable.

Yes, there is a big price difference. There have been stories of botched replacements, insurers balking about replacement, etc.

Will you be getting HUD?

I know a lot of people are upset that HUD is bundled with Executive Package but who is not going to be stopped by that?

Let's poll.
