What’s the latest on this? Has the March 2019 update been unlocked or does it still need bench unlocking?

Yes, still needs OBD Unlock via Bench (No Cracking of Seals Though)

I just completed this. I did the bench unlock through EAS. Same day turnaround and the whole project (installed crank bolt capture and did new plugs) given the DME needed to be pulled off. EAS was awesome, as was PTF with support. Super happy with the results.

I had sent PTF a screenshot of my DME software, they said it was good to go for the flash, but I got this message when I attempted to flash it. I am beyond annoyed.

Confirm with them if it's ok to ignore the warning
You did not post the software ids so I cannot say if you're good or not.

No I decided not to ignore the warning, don't want to risk it. I sent them the screenshot, waiting on a response. I dont really want to do a bench unlock.

I guess they needed a little more information from the car, but they came back and said I can ignore the warning and flash it. Ill give a try and see, fingers crossed.

I’m curious about this as well.. did you have any luck with the flash after ignoring the message and installing?

Also, what DME software version does it say that your car is running in the BM3 app?

Apologies for bringing this old thread up.

My DME is already unlocked with BM3 but from time to time I would relock the DME for some specific reasons. Recently my iDrive module (iDrive knob sensitivity, nothing to do with BM3) has developed a problem and my local BMW dealer is offering me a firmware/software update hoping to resolve the iDrive issue. The dealer cannot specify what update they will be giving me however.

My question is, what specific firmware/software (iDrive, iStep, NBTevo or something else?) and what version number from BMW would no longer allow my car to be flashed with BM3 by myself (I know there is no limitation with bench unlock but that's not what I want to do routinely)?

Based on the quoted message below, it seems like the issue is with ISTEP level 19-03-5xx? Does it mean if BMW is only updating the software of iDrive/NBTevo then I won't have any problem?

ISTEP level 19-03-5xx seems to be what's causing issues. Not possible to downgrade that I'm aware of, we'll have to wait until PTF provides a solution - which shouldn't be much longer.

You can check your ISTEP level in VCM in esys. For example, If your car was updated recently at the dealer, it will be on 19-03-522 or 530, PTF can confirm if 522 or 530 ISTEP is causing the issue, since I haven't seen a 19-03-5xx version roll in yet.

See the included version/i-level chart for reference:

Hope this clears things up. Goes without saying, it's a good idea to hold off on any dealer visits if you want to keep your tune at the moment.

I highly doubt a software update will fix an idrive knob if it worked perfectly before and had no other updates prior. Dealerships do not have the luxury of updating a single module.

Modules (including DME) will update if the newer iStep calls for it, however the a previously unlocked DME will always be unlockable. Build date will determine if this is through the OBD2 or bench unlock.

Thx Tom. So build date matters most (my DME has already been unlocked by flashing BM3)? So even if I get an ISTEP update to the 2019 March update, I will still be able to unlock my DME using BM3?

Correct, you may need to bench unlock but your specific DME will never be unlockable.

Vehicles manufactured 7/20+ are unlockable at the moment.

Tom, my car is a 2018 M3. With this build date, even with the March 2019 update to the DME, I will still be able to unlock the DME again by simply flashing with BM3 instead of having to bench unlock, right?

As long as the bootloader isn't updated during the process, yes.

I'm sorry but you posted this same question in 5 different threads with hardly any detail. Please read through all 5 threads entirely and then provide the relevant details. You will see from reading which details are relevant (battery, cable, adapter, phone/laptop, exactly what you did, etc.)

Please pick one thread to work your problem, or start a new thread specific to yours. We need to keep your info consolidated so others can help.

This is a very interesting statement.

I have a F87 M2C running I-Step F020-18-07-530 (mostly, HU already updated) which is running Bootmod3. So if I read this right I can update the car to F020-21-03-530 by only not selecting the highlighted option in the attachment below?

Is it really that simple or is there more to it? Is there anyone who has actually done something like this? I assume I have to re-flash BM3 at that point as the DME is running the original firmware again. Any issues with that?

Thanks!
