I'm turning 30 in January and wanted to buy myself a birthday present - in no way is this a midlife crisis deal. I just really love the bodystyle of the current M3s and have always wanted to own/drive one. I work hard for my money and am not a trust fund baby.

Looking to gather some insight across the forum on the age range everyone purchased their first M3. Was it too early/late? If you bought one early on in life, if you had the chance to do it again, would you have waited? Thanks in advance you beautiful people.

I'm hoping to buy my first before I turn 35... I'm about to turn 32 next week.

I think the situations, income, priority are all different for all people though. For me I had an AP1 s2000 from age 19-30 but my mom paid for all of that. I got married at 27 and the s2000 was stolen at 30.. so I financed and purchased my first car really, a 2015 Acura TLX 4 cyl. My wife and I purchased our first condo for 357k a month later. A month after that our first baby was born. We just sold the condo and bought a townhouse for 710k in a more expensive neighborhood for more room, better school and neighborhood because we are now expecting 2nd baby in 3 months and I am now 32 yrs old.

I was very very tempted to get a F80 but much bigger mortgage, 2nd baby, first baby is about to start daycare... my wife needs a new car soon..

and the HOUSING in SoCal is insane. I feel like if I lived in a different part of the country.. where housing could be 1/4th of SoCal, I'd already have an M3 by now. SoCal Housing price is ridiculous, but our income is not proportionally higher, and the M3 prices are about same everywhere.

So this wait for a M3, which started pretty much soon after I got the s2000 years ago, I will have to continue to wait... but I hope in 3 years but I guess by then, MY18 F80 could be much more affordable.

Good for you, man!! I agree everyone's priorities comes with their own circumstances. Congrats on your new townhouse. I've heard horror stories about real estate in California, not only SoCal. I'm fortunate enough to have a pretty successful career in the middle of nowhere (Arkansas), where housing is what I would guess to be considered cheap to all the California natives. Good story man, keep the grind on and you'll have your amazing M3 in no time!

Congrats on your new townhouse. I agreed the housing price in Socal is pretty high compared to other area, and I couldn't purchase my first house until I was 34. I worked very hard for my career and was lucky I got an offer in a position where I could comfortably afford a mortgage payment with an M, which I purchased it a year later at 35.

You just have to work very hard, and you will be sitting in your own M one day.

I feel the same way. Housing in my city is bonkers and definitely limits the amount of toys one can afford. One day...

Ordered the M4 as a birthday present to myself... and received it a few weeks before I turned 36th.

I'm not necessarily a BMW fan but I always fancied an M3, especially the e46-gen (CSL)...

SoCal housing is insane and I think you are making a wise choice holding off. I'm 40 and got my first M3 last year at 39. I always wanted an M3 when I was young and it was worth the wait IMHO when all my ducks are in a row and payments aren't even remotely a problem. Having a house that's appreciating in value, check; well funded retirement fund(s), check; car payments are less than 6-7% net monthly income, check; diversified stock portfolio with dividends, check; etc etc.

I can tell you, it feels so much better when you know that you are in a good place and those M3 payments are stress free. I'm glad I waited, but it's not like I was driving a used Camry the whole time. I had a CPO Audi S4, a 328i, and a 340i. There are plenty of great cars that will cost you less than a $80k M3. Your gut will tell you when it's time, and by then there will be a newer M3 out to drool over. And remember, don't work too hard, work smart and don't forget what's really important.

First M3 at 37....by the way, a mid-life crisis occurs around 50, not 30. Lol.

You certainly have your priorities in the right order.

With the asset you are building in your townhouse, you'll have the option of moving to a lower-cost market, and buy several M3's down the road. You'll come out way ahead.
