Now that the S55 is forced induction, it should be very easy for BMW M to offer more power as a factory option with a ZCP Competition Package (along with some other goodies). I think the real question is not if they will or not, but when?

Yeah, honestly, I'm willing to bet they'll do what they did with the M5/M6.

I'd put the odds at 100%. It's the timeframe that I am not sure of.

Maybe w/i a year or when the F3x LCI comes around... I thought there were many articles on how BMW was going to spread its model lineup to be more competitive w/ Audi then have black series fighters to battle with MB

I bet there will be a comp package - not sure if this will have the special color or it will be available from the get go... I hope it is some type of dark blue like azurite or something

Also, I bet there will be a more hardcore version coming out so the standard model will have 415 the comp package like 430 and then a track/perf pack something closer to 475. I know the X4M will have an uprated S55 so maybe see this motor in the perf pack

I thought the plan was to further develop M into a sub brand just like I... so the F8x separate chassis designation was the beginning of that divergence

So it maybe worthwhile to wait it out

Yeah im thinking that it would not be an inital launch thing. Something similar to how they just started to offer it on the LCI M5 and M6.

Agree. In fact I wouldn't doubt there being more than one special model. Another key question though is if all of them will be available in NA.

MPPK for an M. These power packs seem to go hand in hand with turbo cars. I suspect the Comp pack is likely

Didn't the M5/6 get it because they were getting their asses handed to them by their competitors?
On second thought....maybe I'm thinking of the steering or exhaust revisions/upgrades.

100% they will if not at launch, but certainly in time offer a comp package, along with various other special editions. And the planning for the timeline for issuing them and the markets they will be released in will be well advanced by now, as will long-term planning for the LCI. And it's nothing to do with what their competitors are doing at this late stage in the development cycle, it's largely driven by marketing and about maximising the profit they can make from happy punters like ourselves.

All I pray for is that the 6MT makes it to NZ.

I wish we could all say "no" to these power packs. So what is the launch or standard car, half baked? The 15bhp increase on the F10 M5 was a joke and a sad result of the huge profit AMG makes from such tactics.

During the LCI I used to look forward to the small tweaks that came with the CS edition, especially as the changes (in the case of the E46 especially) were based on improvements 4 years of release showed the car needed, and also a little more visual heft with the drop and wider wheels. But a power boost for anything other than the much more exotic CSL or GTS variant is tacky and a slap in the face for early adopters given that an M3, or M5, should have full power from the start.

Were it available from launch (not a 100% impossibility, how can one know?) which is highly unlikely, I'd have to look at the numbers and decide if i wanted it. Were it like the M5s, I'd pass, and that's from someone who usually ticks almost every option box imaginable like a true victim of marketing.

Couldn't agree more Carl L....the problem is we all get so excited and sucked in by an extra 15hp and a couple of little goodies that make bugger all difference to what is already a perfectly fantastic car.

Imagine a mass-punter reaction where we all just wanted base-spec cars and were happy with them (except of course China and Dubai where they could get all the gold leaf and whale skin seats they want).

Well as many downsides as going FI there are, the one good thing is that bumping power is so easy that 100 percent the m3/4 will get a power bump with a c-package down the line. The problem with all the last engines is there was really no room to bump power without really changing emissions or other things that would require complete recertification and hassle that it made it impossible

I am not usually one to weigh in on the new M3, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in the 415-hp projections, especially after initial projections were in the 450 hp range.

I personally would not waste time or money with a BMW factory package that offers an HP bump. I'm suspecting your money will go a lot further with basic quality aftermarket bolt-ons (e.g. downpipe, exhaust, etc) and a good tune given the car will be FI.

...then you'll be shafted on warrantee issues.

Very true. But if you're looking to squeeze more power out of the car that's the route you're going to have to take. No factory pkg is going to have anything that drastically compromises emissions and thus the gains will be very very minimal at a likely ridiculous cost.

At 400+ HP the M4 will be plenty fast for me, especially coming from a E46, and maybe more if they deliver on the weight saving tech.

People griping about the 415hp number will shut up when they sit in it and experience that turbo torque. It's going to trounce the E92.

It will absolutely trounce the E92 M3, but it will do so because it will have more peak hp combined with less weight, completely independent of how much torque it makes.

Yeah, agreed. I mean, it won't sound the same, the power delivery won't be as smooth (there's no such thing as zero turbo lag, even though it'll be super super low lag), but it'll be somethin' else. Also, it'll be more easily tune-able, courtesy of already being FI.

Oh? Surely a competitor with a 400hp+ Cummins turbo diesel putting out 800 ft-lb of torque could bury both an E92 M3 and F82 swamp. Right? I mean all that torque must mean something for performance, no?
