All this thread has told me is that what I really want is a 991 911 with sport exhaust. I'm sure the M3/M4 will sound fine for the majority of buyers. For the rest, that's why the aftermarket exists.

That's a good catch. I was hoping for something like a 500 mile break in.

I like the engine noise. It's reminiscent of my '95 E36. Do I like the E93's V8 sound better? Yes. Am I gonna complain about a good-sounding, gutsy I6 that will destroy the V8? No.

Bring it on!

The car was in cold start warm-up. Anybody who owns an N5x turbo motor knows how loud and blatty they are in that mode for the first minute or so they are cranked up. The M3 has a very free flowing exhaust which will magnify this cold start "cat light off" routine that they go through (as anybody with an exhaust on an N5x car knows as well.) I'd like to hear one that's warmed up and out of that mode....the N5x cars really settle down and sound like normal BMWs once out of this mode as I'm sure the M3/4 will as well.

I'd say that is pure speculation. Given the different turbos, state of tune and different exhaust, comparisons to N54/N55 are fairly out the window. Sure there will be some similarity but I don't think you can say this with any certainty.

From the spec thread:
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=923203

Quote:
•Electronically control Exhaust
  • ◦Electrically controlled flaps just before the rear silencer minimize exhaust back-pressure and produce a BMW M sound, as well as giving precise feedback on engine load
  • ◦When closed, flow is forced into and laterally across the silencer; when open, flow is more directly through the narrow part of the silencer
  • ◦Different selectable drive modes feature different engine sound profiles
  • ◦Catalysts with metal substrate (less restrictive than ceramic)
  • ◦Exhaust always exits all four tail pipes
If it is controllable electronically, the sound could vary depends on what the flaps are doing. There is still much to find out.

First thing to go will be the stock exhaust on our M3/M4.
This x219372193782139027813.

I'm honestly going to hold out on the M4 until I can hear its potential. Sound means a great deal to me, especially in the cabin. I fall head over heels in love with my E46 M3 every time I get on the throttle. Until I come across some aftermarket exhaust that makes the M3/M4 sound good - I won't buy one.

But on a side note, I am absolutely loving the dashboard and the gauges of the new M cars. They're so elegantly put together and look so amazing.

Engine doesn't sound too bad on this test mule, you can hear it rev out at the end

If anything, I'd say that your idea that it isn't in cold-start mode is more closely related to speculation than what I said. Every turbo 6 BMW sounds like this on cold start regardless of number of turbos (N54/N55) and frankly I'd say the N55 actually sounds a little more like a tractor on cold start than the N54.

Different turbos has nothing to do with it...in fact, the larger turbos on the M3 would actually make it louder as the smaller turbine wheels and housings on the lesser engines help muffler it more. Same thing with the exhaust. It is lower restriction and louder...again which makes it very gravel-y sounding on cold-start.

Reasons it is almost certainly in cold start:
1. Condensation is coming out of the exhaust when he revs a little. Only happens with a cold exhaust system and cold motor. Plus he is indoors and it wouldn't be prudent to let it idle until it warmed up.
2. Sounds exactly like cold start on an N54/N55 when it drops back to idle.
3. BMW has stated they are trying to make the M motors closer to regular production motors for economy of scale. This cold start routine works well and has been implemented across every other turbo 6 in their lineup.

And turbo 4 for that matter. My car sounds like a diesel at idle, but even more so when it is in cold start mode. My buddy's F30 335i sounds obnoxious at cold start, but it is sexy at normal idle.

Why do you guys continue to perpetuate this as some recent phenomenon??? This is ALWAYS been the case with BMW ///M. The S65 was an anomaly.

Because until recently they were using the S65. Perhaps I should have said 'they are trying once again to get back to using motors built off current production powerplants." Regardless, the S65 wasn't, and as such, they are trying to get back to it.

There are still cars made today that have speed, handling and sound.

like C7 vette. or if you want a 6 cylinder go grab a 911. those cars seem to have very nice exhaust sounds.
Sorry for the delay in response, missed this.

You might be interested to know that I am test driving and evaluating ZL1's and 1LE's as well. Arguably the gen5 Camaro's are more "drivers' cars" then the upcoming M's. They don't have the fit and finish of a BMW of course, but if you value a scruff-of-the-neck experience,... they do have V8's, 6-speeds, recaros, LSD, lower final drive, lift-reducing aero, dual mode exhaust etc. Not to mention HUD, and an infotainment display where it belongs. And they are easily upgradable for power and handling if you feel the need.

I need back seats and a usable trunk. Which is where 'usability' comes in for me. And I'm sure my kids would hate me if went roaring down the street w/out them.
