Winter Tire
What’s a good winter tire that anyone has experience using?
Looking for pairs of 265/30/R20 and 285/30/R20 for M4 Comp (F82). Have Pilots at the moment, but rears have broke traction at 70mph on a straight road! Anyone else had that? 😅 Is the Pirelli SottoZero any good? |

Bridgestone Blizzack, Michelin Alpine, and SOTTOZERO are all good options but I’d rank them in that order. I have a set of 19” winter wheels (19/255/35 front & 19/275/35 rear) with 8 depth front, 9 depth rear for sale. I haven’t posted them yet but will do so tomorrow with pics.
I live in Denver and driving an M3 in the snow with summer tires is flat terrifying and nearly impossible. Mine was tuned though so maybe it was the extra torque. I sold it 6 months ago for something with AWD but didn’t want to try to sell the winter wheels and tires during the summer. |

Did 400 miles today in -4°C with summer tires, Michelin Pilot super sport cup, in M4 comp and was very very scary.
Got tires to 18°C and no more. Had maybe 90 miles with driving snow headwind. Heart in mouth stuff, tailing trucks. Will have a look at the Blizzack and if I can’t get those Zero Sotto. |

Tirerack has the SOTTOZERO for $1,700. I have them on my Carrera 4 and they work great. The winter wheel/tires I’m selling would be a step down aesthetically since their 19’s and black 16 spoke (BBS I think?) wheels but if you’re goal is to save money and have an extra set you can change yourself, I’d sell them for $1,000 plus shipping. But otherwise, the SOTTOZERO is a great option that will perform similar to Blizzacks. I drove in 6” of fresh snow in the M3 on winter tires and the front fascia plowing was a bigger concern than the tires.

Another SottoZero 3 user, no complaints really. Have driven them in snow but they definitely shine when it’s dry but very cold outside. Running a 255/35 square setup on factory 437M’s. Agreed that Blizzacks and ice x/alpine pa4’s or alpine 5s are also a great option.

It’s going to be virtually impossible to find 20 in diameter winter/snow tires for the f8x. Your best bet is to switch to a 19”, or 18” if you don’t have CCB, because you’ll find a much larger selection of available tires. Also, you don’t want to run wide winter/snow tires become they tend to plow through snow rather than ride on top. I’d recommend either a 255/35, or 265/35, 19” on all four corners or, if you can run 18”, get either 255/40 or 265/40. I run 245/40-18 on my e92 m3, 235/40-18 on my f22 m240ix, and 245/40-18 on my G20 330ix. F82 sits in the garage all winter. All of the tires are Pirelli Sottozero line of winter tires. Have had good success with Bridgestone winter tires as well. Buy a used set of OEM wheels on the forum or a reasonably priced set of flow formed wheels for winter.

I picked up a set of Pirelli winters on nice 666 but my looking at them they need a good scrubbing as they’ve been in storage for two years. |
