RESOLVED: Steering Clunking/Popping Noise?
I've seen many posts with a lout popping/clanking noise but this is a more subtle sound that seems to be originating from the center of the steering rack. I can hear it when stationary or reversing slowly. I don't hear anything while actually driving (I think). I even threw the car on an alignment lift and confirmed it's coming from the middle. Perhaps I'm having OCD or there's something up with the new spacers I installed but is this sound normal? It sound much more pronounced inside the car. The techs at my shop think it's the steering rack as well.
Update 6/4/18 > Still an issue, and it has turned into a popping/clunking noise from inside the vehicle. The clicking is still there as well but quieter (due to loosening and re-tightening the strut clamps under load). Update 6/6/18 > Issue resolved. They re-installed everything, replaced the following bolts (again) and also replaced the upper "hats" for each strut. Shop said they had extra brand new ones. I'm almost certain that was the golden ticket but who knows. 07-11-9-905-418 HEX BOLT WITH W 2 33-32-6-768-884 HEXAGON NUT WIT 4 34-33-9-806-226 NUT, SELF-LOCKI 2 33-32-6-760-668 SELF-LOCKING CO 2 07-11-9-905-610 HEX BOLT WITH W 2 31-30-7-854-446 GASKET 2 31-30-7-855-400 HEXAGON SCREW W 10 33-52-7-850-600 12-POINT NUT 2 Last edited by slaughter.mode; 06-09-2018 at 10:26 PM.. |

We did dive underneath the car yesterday and there's no noise coming from the sides, just the middle. I'll double check those, though. Do you know the proper torque spec? |

It's def. a nuisance. I heard it the first time I brought the car down off the lift after doing the M Performance coilover install. You can clearly hear it when you loosen and tighten the pinch bolt nuts on the vehicle. I loosened and retorqued the nuts and I haven't heard it while driving but as I said I do hear it when the suspension is re-compressed after being fully extended on the lift. I'll probably have the car up on the lift in a few days, if I remember I'll take some video so you can hear it upon compression of the suspension.

Yea I preloaded mine (albeit not the best way) just putting a jack under each tire and then torqueing the nut while the car was in the air on the lift. Everything feels tight in the steering. Like I said though I don't hear it when driving so it doesn't bother me.

I def. don't recommend doing it this way if all you have is jackstands and a jack! I would go for some ramps first but you'll need to make sure you can actually access the fasteners without too much trouble.
I only loosened the nuts then retorqued. I did not turn the wheels. |

Well, I got the car on ramps under load and loosened tightened the strut pinch bolts (16MM on passenger side and 17MM on driver side) and re-torqued to 60lbs...no dice, click remains.

I would try to bring the car to the dealer and see what they say. I think they have a sib for this noise. Also If it sounds like it’s coming from the center it may be the bolt on the rack that may need to be snugged, but I would let the dealer do that and try to chase the noise down. |

I may also remove the stud conversion too, not sure if they'll ruin my $460 titanium studs or not by putting a gun to them or trying to over-torque them to factory spec. Update, pulled spacers, no difference. Car going to dealer tomorrow. I do wonder if it's the stud conversion...but I'll let them take a peek assuming a stud conversion will not mess with warranty. I've had the same problem, had the dealer replace my lower steering shaft and the click went away, my click was a little bit louder and more pronounced. Noticed it after I unfortunately hit a bad pothole so I am assuming that must have been the culprit.

Interesting. Well they've now had it for 2 days so hopefully they're doing work and sorting this all out. I had the car on an alignment rack above me and it really did sound like it was coming from the steering assembly but we'll see...

They refused. They said since they didn't install the MPHAS kit they refuse to look at it and indicated there's something wrong with the suspension, perhaps the way the spring is seated, etc. No details or specifics. Sigh.
