Pilot Sport Cup2 - Tire Plug Fix
Hey guys,
So I’ve got what appears to be a minor leak in one of my rear tires. I’m planning on locating it this week and was wondering if a tire plug would work or is recommended? I figure it will be okay, but am unsure if a plug is recommended for a semi slick tire vs the average all season. Appreciate any insight. |

I'd do a patch but plugging/patching is totally fine for street use. In my case, no one is going to recommend tracking on a patch, but I did an entire season on a patched Cup 2 with 0 issues and know guys who've done spot plugs at the track with 0 issues.

I've similarly heard from "ol' timers" in the paddock that they've run plugged tires on track with no issue. When you think about it, assuming you're not trying to plug something stupid (on the sidewall), it's hard to envision something catastrophic happening in the middle of a session. You're likely to be monitoring pressures anyway, and if the plug begins to fail you'll see it in the pressures.

I had to plug a rear tire in west Texas a few years ago. The Michelin 4s held up great for another 7000 miles until the set of tires ran their course. I’ll never travel w/o a plug kit in my trunk. Best $25 I ever spent.

Funny timing as I picked a large screw in the middle of my left rear MPSS and even though they aren’t so fresh I’d only had them two months since I switched to 763m
I had this plug kit and compressor in the boot for two years and I have to say it was so easy to fix. |

I’ve had to repair a MPSC2 tire after getting a nail in it. I repaired the tire but only used it as a street tire after the pair. Even though it was a small repair, the potential damage to the structure of the tire was enough for me to retire it to street use only.
