Blew a tire at 65mph yesterday

Luckily it was a rear tire and the road was flat and straight.

Strangest thing - no idea if I hit something or if it just let go. How does one get a puncture the size of a thumb in the middle of the sidewall on a rear tire while going straight on a smooth level highway?

Super friendly tow truck driver though!

Thank goodness you didn't run into trouble. That's the most important thing. Low profile tires can blow easily if they have a sidewall weakness from a prior pothole impact.

There was the initial 'explosion,' and the jolt like the whole rear of the car jumped and then a whole bunch of things happened all at the same time - low tire warning, squirrelly handling, me pulling over, my daughter asking what was happening, etc.

But no warning signs whatsoever - one second it's fine and the next it all went crazy.

Rear tire is worst at high speed then front tire.

I'm sure it was scary with your little one on board.. sounds like you did great keeping control of it...

I would have the dealer check the rim real good,, no signs of stress or cracks ..

Just glad everyone is ok!

Well - I can say the rear tire is definitely no fun, but I always thought the front would be worst as it would make it more difficult to steer and brake?

Yeah - Didn't think of it Saturday, but I'm going to call the dealer today and ask them to look over the suspension and wheel well area to confirm nothing else was messed up, and checking the wheel is a good idea.

They'll also have to clean out all that fix-a-flat gunk that I tried to repair it with before I saw how big the hole was...

Nope, it's not. If you have a blew tire in the front, you can steer at least a bit and catch the situation.
If you have a blew trire at high speed in the rear you need a ton of luck.

FWD or RWD, the rear axle is more important for the stability than the front.
