Edit - please note the typo on the thread title - it's a 2017 M4, not 2019

Hello everyone

Planing buy out my 2017 M4 with 24k miles in a couple of weeks.

I have 1 year of warranty left but I wanted to check here what are the common issues you all may have seen that I should be potentially ready to deal with outside of warranty

My assumption is the car is overall very reliable and no huge maintenance costs are involved in regular maintenance schedule

Couple of issues I've had so far

1. AC stopped working around 15k miles and the compressor was replaced

2. Right suspension (bolt joint I believe ) started clunking on braking and was fixed

I've noticed differential oil leaks notes in the forum

Any other turds I should be thinking about?

Thank you all in advance

Brakes! Even if you do them yourself it will set you back at least 1200. That was the main reason I traded in my 2016 for a new one.

My brakes show about 80k to go in the system, so I didn't count them as something to do in the coming year or two

Ah ok! That makes more sense
I too had my compressor replaced during my break in service as it was vibrating weirdly when it comes on. Took about 2 weeks coz the compressor changed for 2018 but was not updated in the parts manual and had to be ordered from Germany.

I hear very soft clunking when I reverse into spaces and once in a while a loud clunk when I accelerate hard into a left turn. Haven't figured out what the sound is yet but I suspect is the same problem many are having around the mount nut. There's a long thread about it in the suspension forum.

Thanks ! I just read since I am just under 25k miles and my factory maintenance will end next month, I am probably looking at paying diff oil change + spark plug change in another 5k miles at 30k. Is that a fair assumption?

You bought an entirely new car to "save" $1200?!?

I've only got about 8K on mine, so I really wouldn't know! My plan is more time based than mileage based since I end up with mostly shorter trips. So at the 3 year mark, I'll do the spark plugs (they're relatively easy to get to) and brake fluid and at the 4 year mark I'll do the diff and DCT oil change. Did the same plan with the previous car and it ran with no issues at all until traded in at 10 years.

I had to replace mine at 28K. Just depends how you drive but they will not last to 80k. That's a promise.

There were other reasons as well. I was about to pay 3k to ship it back to the United States. Purchased a new car and shipment is free along with free maintenance.

Thank you! This is interesting from what I read and what has already happened. I've had two of these already AC compressor and Left Strut. Looks like I need to think about the other three , especially the diff leak. I have my 3 year inspection coming up, I'll have them look over those specifically. At this point that's about all I can do if there is no leak.

Any idea what mileage these hit for you?

I have 41k miles; I'm only hit with the first 3, the last 3 are known issues but so far, I haven't experienced them.

Valve cover gaskets/oil pan gaskets are common; they usually live 3-4 years before needing to be replaced. Some make it longer, some shorter. The climate also plays a role.

Check your charge cooler level regularly.

They're known to leak and likely $1.5K+ to replace at the dealer. Aftermarket charge coolers are mostly made in China and look worse than stock units with specious technical benefits.
