Disconnected Active Sound. OMG! What a difference!

According to one of the magazines, a stock M3 has a sound level of 47Dba at idle and 69dba at 70mph-cruise, does removing the ASD significantly reduce that?

I'm on the "regular" 3-series forum and have asked numerous times for help disconnecting this annoying ASD module. No help there since most, especially those with the N20, want even more sound. I have a '16 340i with HK, just despise the noise, and hope the procedure shown here is essentially the same. (Anyone know?) Thanks so much for posting this video.

Don't know, but my guess is it should be the same. I did this mod on my F80 and then reverted when I found that controlling it was easy with a valve controller. Or just have it coded out.

I got a 2017 M3 earlier today and had the dealership disconnect the annoying Active Sound module. What a difference!!! Do yourself a favor and just have that disconnected, trust me!

The ASD is so loud that even if you think you aren't really hearing it, it's there and it will give you a headache on long drives.

I waited 3 months before disabling ASD and so glad I did.
I decided to disable ASD after one of those drives and both my wife and I had a strong headache for no reason. After talking about it, both of us felt constant pressure in our ears during the ride.


After you disable ASD you will still hear induction noise and exhaust but only when there's really something actually going on and from the real thing.

But question, when you take the car in for service and updates do they not have to plug it back in to perform correctly? Or do you guys do it prior just in case

I disabled ASD via coding. I also reset everything back to original before service and recode my stuff after.

It also keeps my coding "skills" sharp by doing so.

You don't need to reset it if it's going in for service.

Got ASD coded out after my 1200 mile service and it was 100% the right decision. Still sounds great, so much more natural, etc...love it

I had mine decoded. I used to think I was impressing people with my big growly engine. Dammit! Why aren't you people looking at me when I drive by with this big engine??? I demand you respect the big engine and look at me!!

Now that it's off I realize it was just voices in my head (or my cabin). The voices all seemed so real... I hope the meds help... It's so much better now.

Just pulled the plug on the Active Sound module. It would have been a scary job with just a written description. The video made it an easy 10 minute fix.

Could you link me to the post that lists the steps for coding out ASD?

Are the steps listed below correct?

1.Open up Esys and select as target F020 without DIRECT
2.Read FA, right click and Activate FA
3.Read ECU (the modules list will show up)
4.Select the ASD module, right click and select “Read coding data”
5.Then select the CAFD file, right click and select “Edit FDL”
6.Search for the following value and modify it accordingly:


Value

◾3000 Model Range and set to: F021

7. Save the CAFD and click on the Back arrow.

8. With the CAFD file selected, click on “Code FDL” on the right side of the screen and wait for the magic to happen.

Just unplugged ASD after my adapter that I bought would not connect.

Took OP steps but I had a bit of a harder time. Was able to create enough space to push up the black level but removing it was tougher.

I took out the tab at the top near the trunk but I am not sure if that created enough space. Regardless, i was able to then get my hand close to the module and it came out fairly easily.

Will take it for a drive the next few days and see.

Just disconnected active sound on my 2 wk old MY17. It's a lot quieter inside now. Fake doesn't resonate with me (pun intended).

I had ASD for about a year ... then got the JB4 ... and turn off ASD (BC stalk button) ...

I still prefer ASD switched ON than not

And ... I also find keeping the exo flap permanently open (via JB4), causes some noticeable lag compared to keeping the exo flap at Auto.

A friend told me a story about how he disconnected his ASD module, and when he brought it in for service--without asking for any special troubleshooting etc--they noticed the fault in ISTA (their diagnostics software) that communication was impossible with the ASD module (which is its own independent ECU in the eyes of ISTA and the car).

They proceeded to troubleshoot for apparently a decent bit of time until literally uncovering that the module had been disconnected.

The dealership didn't charge him but did give him a stern slap on the wrist and threatened to charge if it occurred a second time.

This anecdote might be helpful to some of you, either to encourage coding it off, or to encourage you to let your SA know it's unplugged before bringing it in for routine maintenance.

(If ever bringing it in for a software update, be sure it's plugged in, or they may charge you to plug it in.)

I'd tell my SA to never perform any unauthorized work on my car and to call me before proceeding with any investigation. These dealerships can be so annoying with their fear tactics.

To stem any potential misunderstandings, to my knowledge, doing so is not possible with the software that neither is, as of 61.1, nor has been in historical releases, for the S55.

It'd sure be nice though.
