F8x Li-ion battery costs HOW MUCH ?
So... a friend of mine who works for BMW AG and owns an M4 got curious as to how much the M3/M4 Li-ion battery costs to replace. Are you guys sitting down.... Just the battery costs 890 euros. Installation and coding is extra! Thoughts?

Is a battery replacement covered by the BMW maintenance program?

The battery will probably last at least seven(or more) years. At least thats what the e8x & e9x guys have been seeing. I just was shocked at this price, over here we pay so much for everything. Dackel

Isn't your car still under warranty? Why would they charge you for a new battery?

I was charged for a new battery by my dealership back when I had a 335. I was told that the battery died due to "user use" and that I must have left a light on and that the warranty wouldn't cover it. I honestly couldn't say for sure if I had left an interior light on or not so I just but the bullet and paid for it.

This was discussed previously, the battery in the U.S. costs around $800-900 BMW list price. Might be lower than that wholesale, might not.
However the battery is expected to last 2x as long as a normal battery - i.e. ~10 years/150k miles or thereabouts for an actively driven model. And it can be deeply drained far more than a normal battery. In addition, let's say we have to replace the battery in 5 years. It's a newer technology applied to mass produced models and costs will come down by replacement time. To what degree, I can't say. I'm fine if my battery lasts 100k miles and I pay $600 for a new one at that time considering the weight savings, deep drain capability, and expected lifespan. |

Technology Mandates Li-Ion
The technology and electrical demands on this series is awesome. Much akin to other computerized, electric steering or fly by wire systems like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, fancy boats, etc. the power systems require a far more stable, cleaner flow and harder driving system that sustains the high performance of these vehicles. For those who might try and replace the battery with a cheaper system, please turn in your key fob at the door.

Keep the battery charged and conditioned with a Swedish CTEK charger for Li-Ion batteries. I have mine connected frequently. I would advise anyone with this kind of battery to always carry that charger in the car. It is not possible to charge with a regular lead battery charger.

More than likely but the car ended up needing other warranty work done so I just went with it via the dealership at the time. It's not the greatest of dealerships and I had other issues with their service department in the past and I definitely don't plan on buying from them again when I do make my M3 purchase in a couple of years. Oh well, it's in the past and don't care much. Just thought I'd throw it out there that there are instances where the dealer will probably try and not cover it under warranty.

knowing if a lead acid can be swapped in is useful information. These lithium batteries arent exactly off the shelf and available everywhere. Knowing if, in a pinch, you can put a lead acid in to get moving is pretty important in case of battery failure. In warmer climates batteries are replaced every 3-4 years due to the heat. If you start pushing that time frame here it gets dicey. After the 3 year mark, you have to really watch how the battery is behaving and its not worth trying to squeeze an extra 6 months out and risk a battery dying on you in the worst possible place and time. Summer time is when they really like to die.

He was referring to a 335i battery, which did not use a LI-Ion.
Our batteries, when connected to our cars, can not be fully discharged or fully charged unless something goes seriously wrong.
