Shock absorber failure

Hi all,

Car went in for the ris on Wednesday and to look at a knocking sound from the back, long story short I have a failed shock and they will be replacing.. Only problem is the car is now off the road for a week or so, dealer has been really good but to say I am disappointed is understatement..

I know some other people have had knocking from the rear and I wonder if anyone else has had the same issue?

Not good! Funnily enough I heard/felt some knocking today from the rear when going over some rumble strips.

That's what happened with mine, sounded like the exhaust was knocking against the underneath

A week to replace a rear shock? Holy cow. I could replace it in less than 10 min with a floor jack and socket wrench.

That could mean it's a common issue in that the part is in back order.

I will do some more checking tomorrow although the car feels OK.

Mine felt fine however the knocking drove me mad, along with the rattle in the door (which they have fixed) oh and a heated mirror that didn't work..

Doing well for 6 weeks old

Is this the same knocking noise that I'm getting. It's drinking nutters and too be honest has spoilt the car for me so far.

It's been in twice and they 'cleaned' the brakes last time!! FFS!

To my ear it's coming from the near side rear happens more over an uneven road surface and does sound like the exhaust is knocking as the car rocks side to side.

They are replacing the rear passenger shock, it sounds like you have the same issue as me..

Just like the exhaust knocking

I also have a very very slight knocking noise coming from the rear, had it since the day I picked it up. It's going in for the diff oil change soon and I'll get them to look at it.
Notice it more on uneven roads.

Yep exactly the same as me, they said it's the first one they have seen however the part is on back order so it makes me think this is an issue

I'm surprised your car is off the road though. Didn't they say it was ok to drive?

Well I asked them to guarantee the car was safe to drive, they couldn't so I told them to keep it. I drive my son to school every other day and didn't want the risk..

Got a 330d x drive at the mo, have to say I am very very impressed.. On the country roads I take my son to school I honestly don't think I could pull away from it in my m4. Yes it's very wet etc but the xdrive makes a huge difference..

Andy, how are you getting on with your back in the m3?

Yeah, not bad Scott. After using all kinds of cushions I decided to ditch them and see how I get on without them. Main reason .... I've got heated seats and cannot feel any heat with the damn cushions! So far, I don't feel too bad, a few aches and pains but getting used to the seat much better now.

I'm very interested to hear what you are saying about the 330d xdrive. How do you find the handling in the newer xdrive? Obviously it's no M3, but is it roly poly like the early ones?

I'm kinda tempted to go back to a 335d at some point for various reasons, but the xdrive suspension puts me off. Wondering what the lci is like?

Mine doesn't appear to be getting worse at the moment. It's just an annoying little rattle. It's not that apparent, but I can hear it.

Mine was getting worse, at first it was only a slight knocking and by the time it went in it was louder..

If I am 100% honest I think the 330d xdrive is one of the best cars I have driven even if it's a touring. It goes really well, I can get all the power down and it's so comfortable. I am genuinely surprised how good it is and I have had a 997.2 c2s (from new), m4, golf gti's, mercs etc and so far the 330d xdrive is everything in one package. If I had my time again I am not sure I would pick the m4 simply because it's so bad at putting the power down and the 330/335 xdrive is so good.

My back has not been great since I got the m4 and I think it's because the seat doesn't support my lower back. I actually find the seat really comfortable but I don't think it's doing my back any good.

Have you two tried to fix your backs rather than the car/seat??
