Man there is a lot of insecurity on these threads. On one had these are like great bar conversations of 'what car would you rather?', but the snobbery is off putting. Not everyone needs a full blown M car. Many people who are mild car enthusiasts or may be just dipping their toes into the world of performance - the M340, C43, S5 are all great intros to that. Compromised - well no shit, but for the average Joe - they are fantastic and much more fun than the standard versions.
Also, just my 0.02 - your ego should not be tied up that much in what car you own. Many of my partners have Teslas and were dying trying to convince me they were superior than an M car - faster, autonomous etc etc...I listened to their opinions, and I got a manual F80. Couldn't be a slower version and I couldn't give a shit less about their cars being faster. A manual car for me was engaging and I don't need to launch at every stop light to have fun. OP - get what makes your dick hard for the money. That's it. Screw the internet's opinion. What makes you happy for the money you have? That's all that matters. All these opinions should be used to see what people like or dislike about each car. But the rest is noise. |

I dropped 15k into my old 335is and it still wasn't as capable as a stock F80. People can learn from my mistakes lol

As a car aficionado and bmw fan I found this thread brutally honest and somewhat hilarious- I see now the huge laughable gap between the truE M line cars and the "M trim" badging Which I'm quite familiar with my 2011 335 xdrive e90 msport - which I would of never purchased without the msport trim just transformed the look of the car.
The m340 is a little deeper then the cosmetics as you can't get the m340 performance in a base trim you have to go to a 330 - so it's exclusive in that sense at least they did that where previous generations you had the m trim on top of any bmw model car So sounds to me either get something newer 2020-2021 m340 which is more vanilla or buy f80 a few years older for same money that is night and day in terms of driving experience and exclusivity 😎

Wonder if dynamic handling package is worth it on the m340- honestly I'm not a fan of dynamite handling suspension, had it on our Acura MDX and when the magnetic shocks wore out it was over $500-800 each to replace them! So essentially opting out of dynamic handling if your buying something I think is smart bc when they wear down you can get a nice set of bilsteins/ konis and whatever springs you like too

But then there are some videos that clearly show from a roll stock for stock the S55 pummels the b58. Another video I'll post was very good too, they modded them m340 with FBO and said ok it dyno as much as stock f80 but still feels nothing close to handling of the f80 Very interesting

The problem is he is asking which one, i think when it comes to pricing the F80 is just a better car.
He is trying to get a performance car, why go in between? If he asked for a luxury sporty sedan i woulda said go get the M340. In fact one of his questions was solely about speed, this pushes me to think he may care about performance more than someone who asks "Is this a super comfortable sports sedan?" I personally think the F8X is a good sports car but doesn't compare to purpose built sports cars so i don't have my ego in it at all. I would rather have 100's of cars over the F8X but for the price point it can't be beat |

Damn lol so much hate on the M340 in here. I need to hit my buddy up and offer to swap cars and see for myself what y'all are talking about. I mean the m340 sure looks pretty good but it all depends on what your intended use of the car is. I've never driven one but know for sure I could not justify $60K for an M340.
What if you were to spend that $60K on 2 cars? Like a '15 F80 and a daily (Tacoma?). That way you get the best of both worlds and have something you can use in all weather conditions and road trips and something you can use for the driving experience |

Bmw for the price point is super great, there is a reason M cars are so well respected, it isn't because they are the best cars, it's because they are the best under 100 grand. What car under 100 grand are you going to get as raw, track capable, luxurious, street presence and looks for way under 100 grand. I would never touch a non GT porsche, what's the point, they aren't the best of porsche, every dentist has them and they cost me 200 grand. Id rather pay another 100 on top if i had it and get the best i can. |

You should really be comparing a 40k used m340i to a 60k used m3.. 60k new m340i vs used m3 I think most would get the m3

I get this is the F80 section and being a former F80 and 340i owner myself know that the 340i/m340i doesn’t compare on a backroad or track. In a daily commute in traffic? Maybe not so much. I also can’t stand when m240/340 etc people proudly state they have an m car, fake badge people, etc etc. But to just look down on the “lesser” trims is narrow minded.
different people have different priorities, you can’t just shit on people who decide to get these cars. Just saying its either the top tier trim or bust is ridiculous. Why would we buy a X3M for our second car when my wife isn’t into cars. I guess since I got a x3m40i that makes me not a real car person. Lol |

Especially in the turbocharged era where flash tunes can get you the power, what's the point? Genuinely for me it's the "most reasonable" top trim or bust. It has to do something at the best level. Porsche GT cars exemplify performance, then next up the turbo S as it leads all non GT porsche's. You may ask why not M4 GTS then but base M4's. Well i am too poor for the M4 GTS, if i wasn't i would get the M4 GTS over something like a 911 4S. Anyone who has the means to choose between a lesser trim and the top trim, in my eyes either pick the cheapest trim or the best one no? |

Also if i could afford one i would buy the M4 GTS instead. As i said i don't care for in between cars, sorry. Just a preference. GT cars, Turbo S or bust. I will never own any other types of 911 either because i won't be able to afford it or i will buy the highest offering in another brand. BMW M division is the most expensive car i can afford. And the dentist thing is a fact |

The M340i is sporty and luxurious, but it doesn't have the brakes, the suspension, the handling or the steering feel that the F80 has.
The power delivery on the M340i is so smooth that it lacks some of that visceral, knife edge feel that the F80 has. The 8-spd ZF doesn't have the aggression or response of the M-DCT. It's so easy to go fast in the M340i that many believe it's superior to the more engaging, more rewarding, more driver-oriented F80. I miss my F80 terribly. And I look fwd to comparing it to the G80 in a few years. |
