For regular i shift generally 3-4 K rpm for 1-2 and for spirited near 6K. In a bumper to bumper stop and go traffic i shift under 2K rpm for 1-2

I think I had somewhat of a revelation today if anyone cares. I've determined that in Sport and Sport+ modes, the revs come down slower in between gear changes than compared to Efficient mode. I suspect this has to do with the car purposely making the exhaust blurbles us ZCP owners paid extra for. The engine is burning fuel to make the exhaust blurbles and thus slows the rev descent when the clutch is disengaged? Just a theory but this explains why I'm having trouble being smooth in Sport and Sport+. I have to wait longer to let the clutch out especially during the 1-2 shift gear ratio difference. So basically Sport mode makes me drive slower :

Sounds like you may be driving in Sport+ mode. If you are, I would consider practicing in Comfort mode until you feel good about your shifting then switch to Sport, then Sport+.
Comfort and Sport will give you a smoother shift. Sport+ requires quicker shifting to keep RPM's moving and the occasional heel/toe for your downshifts.

Anybody have any shifting tips for a bm3 stage 1 tune? City driving is very difficult in sport and sport plus, making quick starts at a light in first and then shifting into 2nd is very tricky. No problems in efficient mode, but car sounds so much nicer in sport +. It very easily goes into the 'bucking' mode from a stop or shifting into 2nd in sport +. This issue has gotten even more problematic after getting the stage 1 tune.

I find it the only way to get the 1-2 shift as smooth as possible without having to wait for the revs to drop and delay your speed increase (between 1-2 shift) is if you shift out of 1st gear at low rpms (under 2500). Basically just to get the car moving then pop into 2nd immediately. If i let 1st gear go up pass 3K rpm I find it annoying I either have to slip the clutch longer to match the rpms or wait for the rpms to drop on its own which in the meantime your speed increase has stalled temporarily. I hate when this happens because then the car behind you is right up on your ass unless you take off aggressively initially giving yourself some gap.

I think the issue is the revs hang on this car slightly too long and if you try to rush the engagement you'll get some lurching. If you slip the clutch longer then the guy behind you is on your ass. Last edited by Alan l.; 07-16-2018 at 01:20 PM.. |

I think you are right because i've been driving in mostly Sport mode with my new M3. Everytime I switch it up to Sport+ or Eco i feel like i have to mentally retime when i let the clutch out because it would be jerky until I adjust.

yes, try shifting at a lower rpm, 1st under hard acceleration lights up my rear tires and i can also do it in 2nd...till after 40 rpm...so when taking an on ramp fast for merger i get quickly into 3rd and let the two turbos get me to speed.

This car is one of the easiest six speeds to drive. It even revs 500 rpm without touching the gas... If you’re having hard time it can only be from lack of experience. It will come with time.

Timely thread. I did ED two weeks ago and thought I had forgotten how to use a manual!
I thinking BMS will be useful and then tweaking my own habits while learning the car. |
