Are you the type to keep your car showroom quality or you won't be bothered by a chip or two? Really depends on how particular you are. However, if you're going to respray then PPF over it, just know that depending on the quality of the respray, that paint may peel if you ever remove your PPF.

I'd also add that I believe it is recommended you wait a decent while to apply PPF after repainting so paint can cure.

I just dropped my new Heritage Edition off at https://uccboston.com/ they are highly regarded, it’s a 2 hours drive from my house but it was about 40 minutes from the dealer and I went straight to them after I picked up the car. They are doing the full New Car Ultimate Package (wash/clay bar/1 step paint correction, and ceramic pro) and xpel wrap on full front, rockers, mirrors, and they are replacing the rear factory ones with one that cover the full front of the rear fender. I’ve always had the dealers do it for me prior, I think this will be the better route. Not cheap but I want to keep this car as perfect as possible.

I can tell you that it can get a bit pricey but it's totally worth it. Night and day difference. I see ur local, hit me up if u want a contact, my guy is the best at PPF in the business.
With that paint I would have done the same thing since it's my fav gloss color.

Tommy,

Get a roll of Xpel track tape. It works better and is stronger for the track.

IMO, it's a complete waste of money if it's a lease. Dr.Colorchip works decently well unless you're staring at it from really close.

If it's not a lease and if you plan on keeping the car long term, then it might be worth it to do at least a full frontal (including mirrors and front of roof), rocker panels and rear fenders.

TrackArmour for track days.

I agree if you know you are giving it back after the lease I wouldn’t do it either. I’ve certainly wasted several thousand on previous cars I’ve only kept a few years also. If you sell private party and keep the car mint you might get more for it, but if you trade in it’s highly unlikely you’ll get any more for it for less rock chips.

I think you have to ask yourself are you OCD? Regardless if it’s a purchase or lease if you answered yes then you need PPF. Maybe not the whole car but at least the full front end. If you get PPF and purchased the car you must do the CF roof. It’s often overlooked thinking no rocks will hit a part that high but it’s an area that cannot be resprayed or easily repaired.

I had an object hit my roof with a thud on the highway and thought for sure even with PPF I’m screwed. Upon inspecting it there was only a scuff that came off with a damp towel. Had it not been for the PPF the sight of a huge blemish on my roof would have been painful.

After buying a used m4 covered in rock chips I'm going to XPEL stealth my next leased BMW. Probably the m5/m8 when I'm done with this In like 5 years but they'll probably have an m10 out by then.

I've had PPF on prior vehicles but not on my f80. For a couple reasons...I don't daily drive it and I find it cheaper to have the parts of the vehicle repainted if the rock chips are that bad. Alpine white is very easy to match and I use a very good shop that does excellent paint work.

I had my M3 fully covered with Suntek and did the same with my new M5. Its expensive but IMO worth the money as I never have to worry about dings or scratches and also trying to wipe off bird crap or love bugs as I am in Florida.

I've been really struggling with this decision.
I bought an absolutely mint 30 Jahre with 3k miles back in October.

First hand car wash afterwards and they scratched the hood. There must have been something in one of their towels or wash mits. I work from home and don't even drive that much, but I then noticed a rock chip (in the hood..front and center).

It's a no brainer to me, especially with this color that is hard to match, but it's also really hard to justify (especially to the wifey) about another 5k (for a clean job).

I decided I will take it in baby steps and hope for the best in the meantime. I recently PPF'ed the hood (since it's the most in your face section to me) and will do the bumper and/or the front fenders next. I'm trying not to worship the car, but also get the areas that are most immediately noticeable every time I walk to the car.

Luckily, the shop I went to was also able to get the majority of the initial scratch out, where it's not en eye sore anymore.

As for some of the comments above, while I've never leased a car, I wouldn't even consider it on a lease. A lease is essentially a glorified rental IMHO.

My previous owner ppf'd the car from the front to the front fender also did the hood as well. Ngl if you have lots of chips already kinda would say there's no point, but the PPF can preserve it in the future.

The previous owner of my M4 had Suntek installed on the front fenders, hood, mirrors, and both doors. I dropped it off at a local PPF detailing shop this past weekend to have the hood and fender redone, as well as add coverage to the rest of the car and put a couple layers of Cquartz Pro.

For me, as I plan in keeping this car for the long haul, I see it as a way to protect a long term investment.

Even though my car is leased, I did the PPF and MF mentioned above because I wanted to reduce damage from daily use in case I decided to buy out my car. I've said the same for the last two cars I leased but when the lease maturity came up, I ended up trading up in both cases.

A lot of people do things because they claim they will keep their cars forever, but most don't follow through with it. Life changes (kids, need for bigger/smaller car, accidents, or technology) such that you end up wanting / getting something newer within 5-6 years.
Got pics of where you ended the PPF on the rear quarter? Interested in doing this myself as well but probably don't have enough material to do the entire quarter panel w/o a seam.

Newbie question here, how can you tell if the car is ppf’d or not ? Can you actually see the clear film on the car?

Only if there are edges in certain spots, like if only part of the hood is covered, or sometimes you can find the edges on the B pillars if they covered those. Otherwise, it shouldn't be noticeable.

Depends what was done. I only did front bumper, full hood at purchase. Just did roof after 3 years of ownership. I’d check the bumper and hood as those are most common to do. Check the under side of the bumper and hood for edges.
