F80 vs F30 Harmon Kardon
I came from a 2016 340 xDrive with the HK audio and now have a 2018 M3 CP and for some reason I feel like the one in my 16 was better. I am pretty sure they are the same so what else could be causing them to sound so different? I adjusted the EQ on both to the same setup so perhaps its something else like sound insulation, ASD (though the 340 also had it). Any ideas?

I have a 2016 M4 and my wife has a 2018 M3 and I haven't noticed any differences between the sound systems, so it's unlikely that there were changes in the sound system in the different model years.
And since the 340i and the M3 have the same underlying sheet metal chassis construction, it's unlikely that there's any difference in the sound system for that reason. Among audiophiles, there is a claim that speakers/electronics need to be "seasoned" before they reach their full audio potential, so that's one possible reason why you might notice a difference, but you'd have to have a pretty good ear for that.

Could ASD be a contributing factor?

Is the insulation different between the two models? That could definitely be it. That along with ASD.

Yes, I know it has it, most recent BMWs do. Some folks even coded their F30 to sound like it had an S55. However, I wonder if the ASD in the F8X is not louder.

I would almost guarantee it is. Most owners don't realize how invasive the ASD is until they code it off. It takes over the music and robs power from the HK amps.

I hadn't really thought of that, but now I'm thinking it might be worth a try at coding it off. Anyone else coded theirs off and notice a difference in sound of the music?

I unplugged the module and prefer it that way. Agreed it is too invasive, esp at low rpm. The exhaust is loud enough without pumping in more sound.
