F80 M3 ZCP with Active Autowerke Midpipe Video

Hi everyone! I’ve enjoyed reading and learning from everyone’s posts and thought I could contribute.

I have a 2017 M3 with the competition package. Like many of you, I wanted to make my M3 sound louder and deeper. My first thought was a cat back exhaust and after some research I found some that I thought sounded great. When I called inquiring about prices I found out they charge a kidney & half a lung. I couldn’t bring myself to spend that much so my researched continued. I noticed the M3 has two secondary cats and a resonator as well. Since I liked the way my M sounded already and just wanted a little more volume and a deeper tone, my quest for a midpipe was born. There are many options, but ultimately, I choose the midpipe from Active Autowerke because of their single tube design vs two pipes. This design gives the exhaust a deeper tone and the pricing was very reasonable, so I pulled the trigger. The craftsmanship on the midpipe is second to none. The midpipe was sealed in expanding foam so no damage would happen during transit, showing the amount of care that was taken in packing. Once the midpipe was installed I couldn’t wait to hear her. When she started up I thought I was being tricked because I didn’t notice a difference until the car was revved. The M3 come to life with pops and crackles. It was great! I love that it is close to stock when you want it and a beast at the push of a button. Overall, I think the car is 30% louder at full throttle and about 10% louder when driving normal. The exhaust is a lot deeper and throatier now. The pops in Sport+ are insane! When you rev the car out through the rpm, the car almost has an exotic sound to it now. I still have my stock DPs and rear section.

I made a video with an external mic taped to the bumper, so you can get an idea of how it sounds. Next week I will update this page with a second video showing cold start and drive bys at various RPM levels.

Video 1 of 2

In video 2 I will show you how cold start sounds in sport + with the valves open. I will also be doing drive bys at various RPMs so you can get a better idea of how it sounds. The drives bys were done in Sport +.

Video 2 of 2

Great job mate I enjoyed the video, overall great improvement some personal obs -
I think the Burbles are just too much . I feel the same even in my car .
Car sounds great at half load.. i think at higher rpm i prefer akrapovic / remus slightly more.

Thanks! I had it in Sport+ which makes it have more burbles. In Sport it burbles less and the burbles are not as loud.

Great video! To fit the midpipes, did you have to cut the factory exhaust to make it fit? Sorry if it's a newbie question.

Factory exhaust does have to be cut, the oem system is a 12 foot long one piece unit

Your video popped up in my channel feed a couple days after I ordered my AA pipe from AutoTalent. I'm sitting by the door like a puppy waiting because of the video.

I do kind of have an itch to add the Remus axle back but that my be out of budget this summer.

Thanks for the vid man.

Nice vids. I'm getting my 2018 ZCP next week. Definitely thinking of getting the AA mid pipe and keep the stock exhaust. Any input on sound in eco mode or normal cold start? I've read it's just like stock?

I doubt he'll reply. Thread is 2y old and guy hasn't posted since '19.

AA single mid will lower the tone and increase volume on your stock ZCP. Tommy L's vids will help you decide.

I did the full AA Signature cat-back exhaust because I like that engine sound LOUD (burbles off).

Thanks! I've been watching a bunch of Tommy's videos. I haven't found much comparing single vs equal length set ups with stock ZCP.

Here's a Non-ZCP (with burble) with only the EL mid swapped in. You can hear that the tone is much higher compared to Tommy's. This EL has the resonators, which is why (I assume) the drive-bys don't have much burble noticeable.
