Burn baby burn - fire burned down M4 on Turo

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
It's a sad day in the BMW world! Got a call from one of my Turo renters about a problem with the car. I asked if he could send a picture to describe what happened and then I get these photos. Theres a very good chance he was driving this F82 6MT irresponsibly but this should not happen.

I am reading about several recalls in the BMW world causing potential fires. Is anyone aware of this? I'm letting insurance handle this but is there anything else I can do? Depreciation + mods = 5 figure loss on my part.

No bueno, glad they are alright. I guess I'm not sure if you can drive one irresponsibly enough to get it to catch on fire without jumping it/going off road etc. I could see possibly irresponsibly maintained, low oil etc, even then though it is tough. Crazy, let us know if you get any info on the cause.

Damn, that's a shame. Were you renting it on Turo or something?

I'd be curious to know how insurance handles this. It sounds like you had this car on Turo or some car renting service. Do you pay an additional premium on that? There is very little doubt that the car it totaled, so good news for you.

I think you would be surprised:

It will take more than a buff. Perhaps a can a bondo and some touch up paint.

That's very unfortunate. Luckily, there were no injuries, or so it would seem.

As others mentioned above, I am curious about how the insurance company handles rental coverage. Are you required to make them aware that the car is being rented and have the policy setup specifically for that type of use? If so, hopefully you had that in place, otherwise this could get really, really expensive in a hot (oh yes I did!) minute.

You should have permissive use policy on the car so that portion would be covered. Hope all works out. Luckily no one sounds like they got hurt.

Not saying it can't happen (it is just very rare) and other than being an idiot on public roads I didn't see anything as to why it should've caught on fire in that vid. We almost never know the maintenance history or what mods are on the cars either in videos like that.

I was cringing waiting for a car to pull out in front of one of the motorcycles........

That and on my insurance (I'm sure almost all others) there is a add on cost if I want to insure my mods etc.

Turo has their own insurance for every vehicle on the platform. My personal insurance doesn't get notified at all. Turo takes 25% of the profits which allows you to use the platform as well as covers the insurance.

Do you know if that has any additional coverage for the mods etc or how they decide what the vehicle is worth (GAP etc)?

It doesn't cover any mods. I bought that car long before I started building out a fleet of vehicles to rent. It was bringing in $2,000-$2,500 a month so I was willing to deal with SOME bs .. but I never expected this to happen.....

Ill provide an update once I get the estimate. They said it will be ACV value which sucks. I'm guessing itll be somewhere near the kbb private party value.

wow that sucks.....

I can't ever...ever... EVER! imagine letting anyone just take my car out without my supervision by putting it on Turo. I rather just get a cheap A to B car instead of going down this path because it would feel like renting out my wife/gf lol

How on earth did the CF brace under the hood survive?! Reminds me of the old joke back in my Evo days on how the goddamn CF Evo wing would survive whatever fate fell on those cars.
