Failed valvetronic motor @15k miles

So i have a 2015 f82 whos valvetronic motor failed at 15k miles. I just did the repair myself. The eccentric shaft looked fine, no broken teath and just the slightest hint of contact between the teeth and the valvetronic worm gear. Basically what I mean by that was the color of the eccentric shaft gears were slightly different where the worm gear contacts, but no wear to speak of.

I barely drive the car, its on a ctek charger most of the time. I saw a few posts that lead me to believe this could be the result of the ctek. In the past I would have the car on charge and unlock it, go into the cabin, maybe wipe it down etc =).

I am wondering if waking the car while on the ctek could possibly have been the cause of this. The codes in ista were basically saying the voltage was too high and the position implausible. Curious for those who's have failed how many leave there car on charge and wake it like this.

The symptom was the 4-5 second jackhammer noise. I did have a CEL, no problems really otherwise.

it was a $440 part, but I spent about $2k in parts getting to that motor and replacing one time use items etc. Would love to avoid it if possible down the road..

No issues using my ctek charger. The lithium ctek charger should not be raising voltage high out of specification and doesn’t work like a normal battery trickle charger that provides a constant low current. That would overcharge the battery and trip the internal safety switch. The lithium charger follows a specific charging curve until the battery is fully charged, it will monitor and only provide pulsed power to maintain the battery between 95-100%

I have a 2018 M3 with 4200 miles and had the same
Issue. The car is garaged all year and is a weekend car, but live in NYC so left it on the BMW CTEK charger.

Similarly I would start car every weekend to warm it up and sometimes drive or wash it. Got the notorious clicking with the CEL light. Ended up needing a new valvetronic motor.

Now I don't use the CTEK to be safe and try to drive it more. Mechanic said the condensation within cause the motor to have a bit of rust

Makes a lot of sense. Any time I plan on leaving the car to sit a long time I drive the car for at least 30 minutes to fully warm the car and get rid of any moisture and fuel from the oil and crankcase before garaging. At that point it goes on the charger and doesn’t get started until I plan on driving the car. Otherwise I try to drive the car as much as I can.

Garage List
It sounds like it happens predominantly to cars that sit for an extended amount of time. I guess from what one of the posters above me said was condensation. I've seen some surface rust on cam lobes from cars that have sat in high humidity locations for a while, so I guess this could be it too.

Has been gotten worse? Do you just live with the noise?

I got a CEL from mine. I imagine you would get drivability issues eventually but cant confirm.

Your definitely not alone from what I've read on here. Seems to be pointing to two possible causes,
1.not driving car long enough to get to operating temp. Possibly leaving condensation to stay/form around top half of engine rusting those components.

2. this ctek charger is possibly overcharging, could be damaging electrical components in our f80s due to constant max charge for a long period time. Or that valve tronic motor may not like a constant 90 percent plus charge for a long period of time. Who knows some cteks might have faulty parts or work a little harder idk iam no battery/charger expert. I commented in a different post how my ctek got kinda hot around stage 3 ,thought it was weird.
To Possibly prevent iam just not going to do short trips and run the ctek once a month. Get it going Sunday morning keep any eye on it charge to 90 percent pull the plug and repeat next month. I will see how it goes.

had this issue on my 2016 with 16k miles in 2020. It happened suddenly after the car sat for a couple of weeks. No symptoms prior.

This should be covered by the CA emission warranty if the car is registered in CA. Poor design. I think this is fairly common with low mileage cars that aren't driven frequently.

I don't believe it is covered under emissions. I called the dealer when I was out of warranty and it did not appear to be.

If you're referring to the CA emissions warranty, it certainly is covered. If outside of CA, you have to read the warranty booklet.

when mine failed, it was rattling noticeably when opening the door or unlocking the car for a few seconds. there is also a check engine light and fault code stored in the DME.
