Who tuned it for e85. For it to hold that long its definitely not the tuner. Did you happen to have a log from that day or maybe a few days prior?

Bummer man on your motor. Carbahn is expensive but high quality but doesn't mean others out there can't match them.

At least call around and check these guys out, good luck.

I appreciate this. I almost signed my life away for the CarBahn engine yesterday but after thinking it over a little, I'm glad I didn't. I have a whole family now since I purchased this car, I can't just blow $25K+ anymore. I'm going to do my research on those and share what I find. Right on.

Cary Jordan. No logs because it's been running flawlessly for so long. I would only switch to my FlexFuel tune from Wedge Performance periodically when cycling off E85.

I remember the feeling blowing the engine on my turbo e36 back in the day. Blew bits of piston and exhaust wheel out the exhaust. Good luck on the new engine.

Do you feel having ran e85 for as long as you did has any correlation to this occurring? Asking because I'm on a full e85 tune, which the car has had for about 2-3 years (no issues so far knock on wood). But after reading this, I'd be fine going to a 91 tune, in the name of a healthy motor.

The only thing that comes to mind is possibly one of your injectors broke and stuck shut, causing a lean-out and a detonation inside the cylinder.

Yes and no. My previous F80 ran for 200K miles with 100k of those miles on a full E85 tune and didn't give me a single issue. Do I think it would've happened if I was running a 91 tune? No. My Full E85 tune pushed my WHP into the 600s whereas a 91 tune kept me in the 500s. That's a huge gap in effort the engine had to put out.

In this scenario I think there was an underlying fueling issue. 6 months or so ago my car went into limp mode and threw me these codes:

11A401
11B401

The shop and I thought it was the HPFP or LPFP at first but hours after it happened, I was able to fire up the car normally and it ran just fine. I never looked back. What TopJimmy said is probably the only realistic scenario that could have taken place; In that in that moment I punched it, the injector stuck shut and boom...and it literally did go boom. The possibility the crank hub and CBC failing isn't off the table yet either but I wont know until I tear it down.

Definitely interested in seeing the findings after tear down. These types of catastrophic failures suck and are expensive. Learning from the failure (all of us not just the guy living through it) is a good way to make the best of a bad situation

Yep, that's what these platforms are for. I believe my shitsuation is a bit of an edge case but the more info out there the better for everyone.

After reading this, I'm going to start doing my oil changes every 3k instead of 5k. I know e85 diluted oil much more than 91 or 93 oct. or probably just switch off e85 altogether. Not sure how common this is for these platforms running e85, but hopefully not too common. These engines aren't cheap. Hope everything works out and you're able to get back on the road asap. Let me know if you need any info from me. Im running a custom e85 tune on stock turbos. Catless dp, and plugs are gapped to .018, I'm making between 570-592hp.

Id def like to avoid blowing the engine of my dream car while I have it lol

Appreciate it. 3K wouldn't hurt for sure but it also wouldn't have saved me in this scenario. I think my scenario with the crank hub and CBC is definitely an edge case. I would make sure your injectors are tip-top, maybe add an in-line filter for additional peace of mind. I think Bend Calibration has a great unit, I'll probably get it for the next build.

Other than what they are literally:

11A401 - Fuel high pressure during fuel injection release: Pressure too low.
11B401 - Fuel high pressure or after enabling injection (2nd ambient condition set after delay): Pressure too low.

No I never figured out what caused it. The issue just went away and never came back. It happened when I switched from my full E85 tune to my FlexFuel tune (along with a E30 blend) so perhaps the large change in fuel pressure might've tripped out the sensor? I'll never know, now.

I've reached out to RK Tunes, Vader Solutions, CarBahn, Straight 6 Auto Parts and even Ghassan for help sourcing an engine. Here's what I've found so far:

CarBahn - 1 month wait but seems to be the best overall solution with a motor that is guaranteed to handle 1200whp without sweating. My shop offered a slight discount as well with the motor and install, seems like the way to go but it's $$$$.

Ghassan - Stay away. Not just because of the negative buzz that you read about them here but I just heard from a very reputable builder and he said 'I actually have two of his engines here brand new and they are going in the garbage unfortunately they have cut cranks…metal all over inside…all chinese gaskets and seals…pretty much a disaster."

Vader Solutions - TBD

RKTunes - TBD

Straight Six Auto Parts - They have some solid S55 motors, from wrecked cars. Local to me as well. I am highly considering the one pull from a F83 with 61K on it. It has a crack in the valve cover from the accident so I'll have to pull the oil pan to clear out any debris but it looks good otherwise.

Thanks for posting this. Good info for anyone to read. I'm glad you're going to get it road-worthy again instead of just part out and trash it.

Also - you drive a lot! 200k miles on an F8x and then another 100k miles on another F8x! ha! Nice job.

Yep it took me 3 years on that 2015 F80 to clock that mileage and then 4 to do the 100k on my F82 (working from home, now) but I didn't spend all that money to let them sit in the garage...I bought 'em to drive 'em.
