I agree that every contingency cannot be anticipated, and MSY may have been severe in his assessment. However, when one places the engine's fragile oil cooler as low and as far forward as possible--which of course makes it the first thing after the plastic bumper cover to impact any road debris straddled by a low-slung car--it doesn't seem like a huge leap to think that strikes upon it would be relatively common...

I dont understand how a driver cant find where to stop for few miles .... This is not the first time someone comes here to say: I couldnt stop for 10 miles.... Low oil always results in damaged engine, period! Regardless what is the reason for it you stop immediately !

7mile bridge to key west is one example. Some stretches of I-40 in the West go up to 20 miles without an exit and between to medians because of construction. Etc. The places exist, although rare.

Also sometimes you don't know the severity of the oil leak after you've hit something to be able to make a calculated decision weighing in risks of pulling over immediately in a dangerous shoulder or going another few miles to a safe area. I am not willing to pull over a shoulder with barely any clearance to the lanes of cars flying by going 70+ next to me with my family in the car. Theres so many videos online of state troopers getting hammered while pulling people over because idiots in the back sees a car and automatically thinks its a moving lane and starts drifting into it then realizing these cars are stationary.

There are so many incidents of people/police getting killed on the side of the highway/road after having car trouble or stopping for an accident. This is a serious high risk issue.

OP, I am really sorry to hear your story. Something similar happened to me last week in my e46m. Driving on the freeway I ran over a fawn going 80mph. I didn’t lose oil pressure and my coolant temperature looked fine but pulled over immediately anyway(this was actually very scary since it was a dark freeway). The car was actually in decent shape considering what happened but my oil cooler was barely hanging onto “deer” life lol.

How would that meeting go exactly?

M Engineer 1: I think we should ensure that the engine can survive if one of our drivers hits an object on the road that they weren't supposed to.

M Engineer 2: * motioning to others * look at Hans over here trying to make a Panzer, want to go for another blitzkrieg huh?

Rest of the room:

M Engineer 1: Yeah guys my bad, maybe our drivers shouldnt run over things. I guess the 1 in 40,000 that has an engine failure is an acceptable risk, welp at least he should have insurance.

The End.

I get your frustration but this somehow devolved into a steering thread out of nowhere. I'm sorry you don't like this car as much as you wanted.

P.S. not trying to say the OP is an idiot or anything, accidents happen, but you cannot expect a company to one plan for every possible contingency including crazy ones and two companies weigh risk vs costs.

Don't @ me.
I agree. The F8Xs platform is a beast at the track because it is built for cooling.
The car is not made to run over debris or go camping. It is made to breath and that particular oil cooler is positioned for max air transfer.
Fact, F8Xs never overheat under pressure.
Fact, you want to run over debris on the road, get a F150 with a lift kit.

Sorry to hear that your M4 is a total loss with 9k miles. At least now you can go out and hunt for your next car.
