Mysterious oil/residue built up.
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the community and just purchased a Nardo Grey F82 M4. I wanted to reach out and ask the forums if anyone has ever come across this "oil Like" built up in the engine bay by the intakes, behind the headlights. |

If I was buying a car and the engine bay looked like that, my next words would be, "Thanks for your time, have a good day".

That is unusual. Normally I would say the oily residue is just cosmoline that was applied prior to shipment across the ocean, but that doesn’t make sense in this case. It’s almost as if the radiator or air conditioning was punctured and a slow leak allowed the residue to form through the spread of vapor. I’d be curious to know if the residue had a particular odor. Sweetness would definitely point toward a coolant leak.

New or used? I can only guess the car had some kind of leak that wasn't cleaned up very well, and now the dust has stuck to it. Either way, for a dealership to deliver it to you in that condition is pretty deplorable.

Even I detailed the engine bay of my wife's 12 year old Scion tC before selling it. Amateurs . Nice color though.
I don't think you have anything to worry about, if you clean it I think you'll find it's just built up dirt or whatever factory/dealer residue. Last edited by damageprone; 03-05-2019 at 02:22 PM.. Reason: grammar |

Yes Bought Used. Been searching for this color combo for a while so when i found it, I went for it. Overall the vehicle is sound, and yes the engine bay was not kept up to par, but I did not let that deter me. Just thought I would post and gather up info before I get it nice and clean. Its got Roughly 17k miles and I did get a oil/filter change even do PO has papers stating it was done.

First oil change is normally around 18k miles (normal driving). It is strange that the oil and filter were changed again and that there are papers proofing that it was done previously as well, considering the low mileage. What is the service history? What was done exactly to the car and at what mileage and how old was the car at that moment? BMW uses Condition Based Service (CBS) so depending on how the car was and is driven you may or may not need more frequent service. Might be an indication that the car was used for short rides and also not very frequently. If the car is two years or older has the brake fluid been replaced? Like mentioned before, have the car detailed which is money well spent and take the car for a nice long drive keeping the RPM between 2500 and 5500 RPM and once in a while to 7000 RPM. Turn off the sound system and listen to your car, try different modes (efficient, sport, sport+), ... Then get a check-up at an official BMW dealer. They will check the fluids, brakes, seals, ... Personally I would have the oil and filter changed to be 100% sure it was done. Last edited by G4BR13L; 03-05-2019 at 02:54 PM.. |
