Question about videotaping track sessions...

I have a GoPro which I always have difficulty with as when I go back to review my videos I find that it didn’t start until halfway through the session although I started the video in the pits. Sometimes it will even cut out in the middle of the session.... completely random and frustrating.
I want to start incorporating data info overlay on my videos such as speed, throttle, etc. It is my understanding that the obd plug in is what determines what is shown on the video or is it the app that you choose.... I am confused. For example, if I have a Kiwi 3 obd plug in... is a Kiwi 3 specific program going to overlay my video or will it be an app specific program that I chose Togo with the Kiwi 3 that will show up on my video?
Also, how does the car data automatically sync with the video? Is this done automatically via certain settings or is this done by editing after the session?

I ran into the same problem just yesterday at BW.. I'm using a GoPro 4. I usually have no problems using them on trips or general use. I had it running before going out to grid and it randomly stopped as I left the hot pits.. I don't know what happened since I didn't touch it but it was a bummer since that was my best session. A friend recommended I go with Sony's Action Cam FDR-X3000

If you have an iPhone or an iPod touch, the easiest and most convenient setup for a GoPro is to integrate it with the M Laptimer, available in the App Store. You plug your iPhone or iPod touch into the USB port in the console, then load the M Laptimer into your iDrive and sync it with your GoPro. The GoPro will automatically start when you start the M Laptimer by clicking on the iDrive controller and will continue to record until you stop the M Laptimer.

This has worked with my GoPro HERO 5 and HERO 6.

Another option for video with track data is to use TrackAddict. You need a windshield mount for your phone (Android or IOS) and a OBDII dongle like the OBDLink LX. TrackAddict will also sync with a GoPro although I haven't tried that yet.

Aim dash + smartycam works well but is $$

With f80, go pro + m lap timer would be step zero to try

I used Harry's lap timer iphone app paired with a GoPro for years. Syncing the data with the video can be done but is a bit of a pain to work through and therefore it usually takes me a day or two to get around to it.

I have since moved on to using an AIM with the GoPro. The AIM is much more accurate and offers much more functionality but is more expensive. I use RaceRender software to synch the two.

My GoPro 4 is junk. I have had many times the GoPro just randomly shuts off or shows it is recording and it doesn't.

I have been using my iPhone and Harry's LapTimer w/ ODBII Bluetooth adapter and haven't looked back. Never have issues. I can export raw camera w/ no overlay, with overlay, clip laps that I want w/ overlay or save the entire session.

I use Harry's as well. Agreed, it's a big PITA to get the finished video. You have to import it from the GOPro then manually tell the app which video goes to which data log. I wish there was just an all in one system that doesn't blow my budget.

What iPhone and mount? I haven't tried this myself but I heard the iPhone 8 or X has some image stabilization features which makes the video pretty shaky when mounted? I have an X and was curious if this has been fixed.

I use my iPhone 6s for my track iPhone so I don’t have those stabilization issues. I use a ram mount to mount my iPhone

In many cases its not the gopro's fault. Check your micro sd card and make sure it is on the list of approved cards on the gopro website. Also make sure you buy your sd cards from only reputable sellers ie best buy. I am even skeptical about buying sd cards on Amazon, because some of the sellers sell shady knock offs.
