yes, the running in check counts towards an oil service interval

Sitting at my dealer and the CBS data indicates I need plugs at 84000 kms (52200 mi)which is 4000 kms(2500mi) after the warranty expired for the free servicing.$1366 is what I was quoted to get this done with 6.4 hours labour!Does this seem in line!

Wakdady says every 3rd oil change the dealer should change the spark plugs. So if you had your 1200, the first one is at 10k, second at 20k, you would be due for plugs. If you don't drive a lot, it's still every 3rd oil change, I don't see how you wouldn't get the plugs before the free service is out?

The CBS readout has never called for plugs. We double checked and it was never requested.I am a little pissed because it amazes me how it is called for 4000 out of warranty!I will probably just leave them as the car is running great with the best mileage it has ever had and do them in the spring before track season.I know Turner says 60-80000 miles before replacement so I am probably ok to wait.

6.4 is way too much. Warranty time pay is 30fru for spark plugs on an S55. Which is 3 hours. Dealers always charge more than warranty time when it's customer pay of course but that's more than double warranty time. Anything more than 4.5 hours would be Over charging in my opinion.

sounds like something's off. maybe someone reset cbs ahead of schedule by accident. i've seen it happen. did the dealer go over the keyread history with you? it's not rocket science, but you'd be amazed at how many people can't figure out a discrepancy and identify where it went wrong. pm me your vin and i can look over the work performed. i might be able to see historical keyreads, but i haven't had to look into that in a while.

At my mileage rate, (4k per year) I'd be due for plug swap at 8-9k miles. That seems awfully early, if I opt not to do it then, would I be able to request to get them done before warranty / free maintenance is out, or do I have to follow the guidelines and get it after 3rd oil change?

you can't request they be done when they aren't actually do. but doing the plugs at 8k or 9k seems pretty early as that wouldn't typically be 3 oil services. Remember, oil changes are different than oil services.

How would I differentiate? I just take my car in whenever CBS tells me I'm due, which is 1 year or 10k miles, I'm guessing 1200mile run in was service, and the last oil change I had at 4k mile was oil change, next one at 8k is service? So that would technically be my second service, so the third service I'd be due?

So for me it would've been
December / 2015 - 1200 miles run in SERVICE
October / 2016 - 4k mile oil CHANGE
October / 2017 - 8k SERVICE?
October / 2018 - 12k mile oil CHANGE
October / 2019 - (4 year maintenance would be up by October 15th, 2019)

I'm trying to see where my plugs would be due.. if we factor every 10k as the "service" then I'm guessing I'd be due on my October 2019?

Thanks for your help!

I think BMWs recommendation of changing the plugs on the third oil interval estimates that the car will have probably 24,000 miles at that point. I have had interim oil changes every 5000, which means I had five oil changes when they changed the plugs. I also have about 25 track days on my car? So I change my oil pretty frequently

Same here they did mine on my 3rd oil change. They replace the air filters.

Went to Dealership for my 3rd CBS with 19,000 miles on my 2016 F80 and was told that spark plugs, air filters and oil will be changed with this service. I dropped car off at 8:30am (not sure when mechanic actually started) and car was still not complete by 4pm. I went by the dealership after work to see status and saw engine parts everywhere . I told the mechanic to take all the time you need to put it back together... It really does seem like a lot of work to change these spark plugs. I'm glad this is covered under the maintenance plan , but not looking forward to covering the cost after the maintenance plan is done

Just had a bit of sticker shock as my car is in for its 6th service and no longer under service warranty. Didn't think much when I dropped it off and they said spark plugs, but he called back to let me know it was billed at 5.3 hrs at $1xx/hr plus parts.

I'm not necessarily eager to spend the 4 to 5 hours doing it myself, but I feel like ~$1000 is steep for spark plugs. I honestly didn't know S55 service could be this expensive - might be time to look at extended service plan. I don't even remember my S54 service being this expensive, and that included the valve adjustments. Don't recall paying this much for S65 spark plugs either.

Anyone had a private shop change their plugs?

You're over 50k miles already? With 6 oil services, on your 3rd one, they didn't offer you to swap plugs?

That price and time allocation seems absurd but probably par for the course for a dealership. In the future you could likely spend less than half of that if you just order the plugs online and bring to a local indy shop for the work.

Or if you had a good relationship with an SA at your dealership, ask if he knows a mechanic that works there and wants to make a few bucks on the side to do it for you.

Yes, I'm at 69k miles. They did change the plugs at the third service per the maintenance schedule. They are scheduled to be changed every 3rd service, or at least that was what was reported earlier in this thread. Because the car is turbocharged, it needs new plugs relatively frequently.

That's probably what I'll do. I had my E46 serviced at a private shop after 50k miles due to the valve adjustments being so expensive, but just used the dealership after 50k for my E93 because it wasn't too expensive. With these spark plug changes being so regular and so pricey, it's probably time to go back to a private shop.

To be clear, I ended up telling him to hold off on the plug change. I just couldn't stomach paying that much. I'll shop around and have them changed out soon.

Way to go! I am looking forward to put that many miles on my 2017. At 6.5 right now. To me spark plug set at $150 already steep. Can't see how it's going to take more than 3hr DIY

I had plugs installed at 30,000 miles. I got the dreaded drivetrain malfunction & flashing check engine light at 41,000 miles. I took it in to bmw and the tech says #4 plug is misfiring. The work order says to change not only #4 plug but all plugs. Now I question whether they really changed the plugs at 30,000 miles.

Most of the techs are honest. The guys who don't actually do the work get weeded out pretty quickly. Your plugs got changed. Maybe #4 plug was damaged during service.
