Does your steering wheel jitter a little bit?

I've experienced this in both my 2017 and 2018 F80 and I'm curious to know what others have to say.

When on the highway (really any road tho) my steering wheel will sometimes jitter a little bit. It's not a vibration and I can't feel it like you would with an out of balance wheel, but if I take my hands off the wheel and look at the seams at 10 and 2 you can see the wheel sort of just jitter or shake around a tiiiiny bit.

Is this just how it is on these cars due to the sensitive suspension and sticky tires just translating all the imperfections in New York roads into this little jitter, or is this not something you'd consider normal?

Again, I can't feel it really, and it definitely doesn't feel like what an out of balance issue feels like, moreso just an oddity that I was curious to know if others have experienced.

I was seriously considering taking my M3 in regarding the same issue. I had my wheels balanced and it is still there. I have been leaning towards the roads and highways where I live are just terribly paved.

I am going to the one day M school and was planning to see if the other Ms had same issue... will provide update after I do it next week.

Considering this has happened on 2 M3's I've owned, I think it's just a combination of shitty roads and a tightly tuned suspension.

Do you have drive assist? Lane departure warning will vibrate the steering wheel.

I don't have lane assist etc. and I get no jitter etc. It's solid, good luck with your issue.

If it's the same thing that I'm experienced its road feedback. I usually feel the little jitter you're talking about when I'm driving over the lane separators either yellow or white lines. Not the little bumps but the actual painted lines. I've never felt it in any other cars I've driven or at least not as pronounced but I actually like it. Keeps me between the lines.

Not sure if the same as what you're referring to, but I've felt a similar, very high-frequency buzzing/vibration on the steering wheel, mostly at highway speeds. FWIW, I've felt it in another F80 as well- so I've always just disregarded. Still, might be worth it to have someone check for bent wheels, etc next time the car is in the air.

Same feeling on my car. I also complained about it so we took out 2 other M cars that were on the lot for comparison. Brand new F80 and F83. They felt the exact same. So the conclusion was it was normal. No reason given.

I felt the same thing but it ended up being the lane assist. The steering wheel vibrates when you start to veer out of a lane that it detects. Have a bunch of friends that thought there was something wrong with their car, but was just lane assist.

Yeah what I'm talking about isn't even enough to really feel. You can just sort of see it if you take your hands off the wheel.

That is drivers assist, lane departure warning. I'm pretty sure that is what all of you are feeling.

If you have the lines between the gauges you have the lane keep assist. If you see the solid arrows, then it's active -it activates above 45 mph. The button to deactivate it is on the bottom left of the dash.

16 F82, no lane assist, delivered on Contis , now on PS4S, never had any of the symptoms described so far.
However, if this were an E39 I'd say thrust arm bushings beginning to fail.

they prematurely fail on the F8x platform as well. i've had mine replaced after two years (12,000 miles). these were also the cause of thumping sensation with the front suspension.

There's been a few post about steering wheel vibrations in the Maintenance section.

Would you further elaborate on this?

I've noticed there is a weird thumping sensation in the steering wheel at low speed turns - almost like there is slack between the steering wheel and turning mechanism.

When they failed on your car, did you have symptoms all the time or only under braking? if you had vibrations all the time, did braking exaggerate the symptom?

12000 miles? geez, that's not good news. 540i would eat it's bushings in 60,000 miles, it was like a maintenance item really. When they failed on your car, did you have symptoms all the time or only under braking? if you had vibrations all the time, did braking exaggerate the symptom?

Edit: Not sure why this posted twice, sorry about that.

thumping sensation happened when going over slight bumps or small potholes. they would also occur when turning the steering wheel counter clockwise when stationary or at very low speeds. this did not occur under braking. at first I suspected the top hat or the shock was shot. the tech replaced bushings which solved the issues.

my control arms needed replacing also so it’s defintely not a common issue. it’s most likely due to horrible road conditions here in NY.

Yes a little. And it is a little more noticeable between 87-90 mph. But then goes away past that.
