CPO M3 vs new M340i
A new car is inevitable for me in the next 6-12 months. I've been driving a 2007 328i that I actually still love but at 112,000 miles the itch to upgrade has been lurking for some time.
I'm between a used M3 (MY2016/17), used Alfa Romeo Giulia Quad (MY 2018), or waiting for the new M340i in the next couple months. There's a great CPO 2016 M3 with 15k mi at my local dealer. Currently priced at 54k. I've driven the Alfa and the BMW. Loved both but actually like the ride of the Alfa better. Wife wants me to get the Bimmer. Thoughts on waiting for the new m340i are what I'm looking for. This will ironically be the most expensive route as well. Thank you in advance ladies and gents... |

There is no replacement for a real M car, I don't care how shiny and new it is. The M340 is cool now, until the new M3/4 comes out, then it's just another trim level.

M340i will probably a better car overall.
But still, M3.

That's a big statement but it may be correct. I drove a new 2019 msport 330i the other week and knew I wouldn't be thrilled with the engine but what got me was how unemotional I was with the interior. Seeing the M3 still got me going which is what I'm looking for.

Yea- just educated myself on what certified really means. (5 yrs/unlimited mileage) Depends on inservice date but it could be out of warranty as early as 10/2020 so essentially 1.5 yrs from now.

Try the new M340i, as it has 382hp and awd. It will probably be faster than the f80 in 90% of the time in real world condition.

Hard pass on the M340i. The way BMW attempts to segment the market is sickening with these lame M sport vehicles. Anyhow, I would give the M3 (so long as it's a ZCP) or the Alfa QV a closer look and go from there.

if you really enjoy driving... there is no comparison between an M and non-M product.
I've had 4 BMWs.. and the only one I didn't like was a non-M. lack of a diff just kills the fun.

It comes up in every one of these threads, but I'll say it again. The M-Sport trim level may have good HP and 0-60 numbers, but that's not really what makes a real M car shine. What makes it shine is the driving dynamics, the rawness, and the soul. It's a difficult thing to put into words. At the end of the day, an M-Sport is a soft, cushy car. It may be quick and it may be nice, but that's where it ends.

It's going to be fast. More comfortable than the M3. I went through a similar decision. I was upgrading from a 2015 GTI Performance Pack... Test drove. BMW 340, MB C300, E350, E550, BMW 535i, BMW 550, Lexus GS 350 and the M3... Last edited by 2011zx10R; 03-04-2019 at 06:53 PM.. |

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I'm actually quite surprised by the honest and constructive statements. I think people talking about the soul of the car hits the nail on the head for me. I locked in financing today and got my insurance quotes put together. At 5:30 heading back from work it sold to some other lucky person. This gave me pause and made me realize there is no rush. I'll wait for the m340i and take it for a hell of a test drive. Bottom line, it's probably going to be an M3 or a Quadrifolgio.
Thank you for putting it all into perspective for me. |
