The P-Car got me...
I haven't posted on here a ton but I've probably read 80-90% of the threads since buying my initial 325i in 2000 (I think) followed by my 335i to my F10 535i, my E90 M3 and finally my F80 M3 CP. Let me just say that I've wanted a 911 in some form for over 20 years but BMWs have always shared a special place in my heart for a number of reasons so I've been brand loyal for a very long time, until now. I would also like to add that this site has been extremely helpful and I've enjoyed the overall supportive nature of the group.
After having the drive shaft and DCT in my F80 implode a while back, I knew my time with BMW was limited. I entertained a C63s Coupe, Audi RS5 and just about every option available within that price bracket (there's not much) when I finally decided to make the move to Porsche via a CPO 2017 C4S in Agate Grey with 12,000 miles. I had originally convinced myself to keep the F80 until I could find a 2nd or 3rd year 992 CPO in 3-4 years but after driving the 991.2 C4S it was game over. The M3's power deliver is definitely more brutal due to the torque but the Porsche is still plenty fast (or faster in some cases) but in a more refined way which I enjoy (the PDK is amazing in auto or any of the manual settings). As I told my sales guy after a few days, the BMW felt like it was on the road but the Porsche feels like it's with the road...cheesy I know but it's the only way I can explain it. Just crazy. Thanks to all of you that have commented on one of my posts, sold me something or bought something from me. You guys have developed a tremendous platform/community that I will miss. Take care! A few pics attached. |

Congrats!
I went the same route except with RWD, but I am still keeping my m3 for a daily driver. after following break-in procedures for the 911, here is my conclusion vs the m3: + unbelievably sharp handling (I have rear wheel steering) steering is telepathic and quick chassis is unflappable- I have tried to create slip, but unable to turn on TC joy to drive slow, 911 is responsive at low speeds launch control is unbelievable suspension dampening is much more advanced - loss of practicality v m3 pdk is amazing but can sometimes not skip lower gears vs dct does not pull as in your face as the m3, 911 is much more linear but less punchy I can tell everyone that owns an f8x that I still love this car, it is a different experience and still very rewarding to drive. It has been nearly 5 years, and I will still miss this car when it finally goes.

There will always be something special about the F8X generation, especially those 2015s that were (allegedly, not trying to stir the pot) even more out of control. I did get sideways in the GT3 with her once. Accidentally hit a puddle when flooring it through a turn. Scared even me.

Part of the charm of the m3 to me is to try to tame it, I have spun my rears in 4th (295's vs oem 275's). I find that while it tries to kill me going straight sometimes, on turns it is very controllable and rewarding. Part of the fun I think, but never turn off tc completely- "full retard" as Robert Downey Jr said. 911 on the other hand is completely controllable and the beauty is to find your limits and push them. Very rewarding so far, but can be a bit sterile- I find it amazing that Porsche made this car feel so much like a NA motor, where the power is so linear. Randy P said it best when he felt the car was awd even though it wasn't. I see you have the GT3, you are blessed Last of the NA and 9k redline. Enjoy in good health.

Plusses: Really grips the road and I mean it really grips the road well. chassis is unflappable like you said. All out launches in 1st to redline and 2nd to redline and traction light nev came on. Puts down power extremely well. Great suspension Manual gearbox is simply awesome. Best manual gearbox I have shifted with. Looks awesome Mind blowing sound Minuses- It is pretty boring below 5500 rpm and yes I said boring. Power is too linear, almost makes it feel slow unless you are going wot every time. I understand that's the nature of NA but there is very little torque down low. Not punchy at all. I fact felt slower than my F80 which is tuned to 485 HP. To summarize, I loved the GT3 but wasn't blown away. It made me realize just how capable the M3 really is. Also made me realize that above a certain threshold, there is little return in terms of performance compared to how much you are spending. Point being that the GT3 is twice as expensive as the M3 but it doesn't deliver 150k worth of performance over the M3. Do note the above comments are for the street and not the track. The GT3 I am sure will shine at the track. Made me also realize that I love the punchy feel over the NA linear feel. Makes me think I will love the 911 turbo.

Also it is very rewarding to drive slow simply because you can go 40% throttle, 45%-50% etc as you need it vs the M3 where it usually starts at 40%- then 60%-80% immediately, which throws you back and hard to modulate vs the 911. The m3 really shines at higher speeds where it can maximize the traction and just explode. I will miss this gen of M3's with RWD and DCT, I am not a fan of AWD and the zf8 that the next gen of M3's are coming out with.

Not sure it's the pinnacle of German engineering but I'm enjoying it. I will agree that the M3 is more visceral, particularly at certain highway speeds but I do appreciate the traction from a standstill. While one could argue that the linear power delivery of the Porsche is boring, it is also what makes the car so enjoyable to drive fast, really fast. Predictability equals speed. Power delivery reminds me of my E90 M3 except this car has more grip, super linear in any gear and candidly what I've been missing. The PDK is other-worldly and seems to work seamlessly in either manual or (should I say it) in auto. Surprisingly the steering is what I've enjoyed the most. I do have the rear wheel steering and that may make a big difference but damn the front end bites! With that said, so have been a BMW homer since first graduating college so I see and E46 manual M3 in my very near future if I can find a good example.

Wife...
And for those of you worried about that wife. Happy wife, happy life. Take care of her, prioritize your kids and when the time is right, it will happen. I could have afforded this car many years ago but making my family happy was more important. Funny thing is they all now want to ride in and drive the new car because they know how much it means to me. Don't sacrifice family needs or wants! It's just a car.

Funny story that I forgot to share. The day I got my car I'm coming home and about to turn onto the street that leads to my neighborhood. What do I pull up behind??? A 991.2 GT3! I get my dream car only to pull up my new dream car...shit! Just proves that there is always a "reach goal". Enjoy what you have but always want more! New goal is GT3 but I'm going to enjoy the hell out of the C4S while I have it.
