I really want to plan a trip to California and hit up Laguna Seca.

But first things first, I haven't been to VIR yet.

Definitely a track with visiting, but most track days at Laguna are now 90 dB. If you have stock exhaust, you should be fine. If you do make the trip out here, there’s some other great tracks in Northern California like Thunderhill and “Sonoma/Infineon/Sears point” etc.

Hey just wondering if you've had a chance to use the app anymore? Still positive review?

I ask because I'm doing the 2-day M school in Thermal, CA soon, and was hoping to get some video and track data, but don't own a gopro (or any action camera)... this appears to be an inexpensive option where I can use my phone as the camera for now, but have the option of using it with an action camera if I every upgrade to one in the future.

It's the only app I use now! Used it at Pocono Raceway last week.

i used it for the first time this past weekend at an autocross event. Worked pretty good. I like the GUI, and it was easier to sync GoPro video than Harry's Timer.

One thing I will say about the 2-Day M School in Thermal. I've done this as well as the 1 day and the M Track Day. You will not really have time to setup the GoPro and your phone to run Racechrono for each car you hop into.

All timed events will be timed by the school anyway, and at this point, knowing how fast you were going at a certain point on the track won't really help you. You might get some good info looking at your throttle modulation, but you need an OBDII adapter connected to the car to get that data. With how often you switch cars and how little time you have to do it, you stand the chance of missing instruction and not getting the most out of the school.

Just drive, live in the moment, take in as much as you can. If this is your first time driving like this, then don't worry about recording it. There will be plenty of chances to do that once you get better and you can actually use the videos to improve.

Thanks for the advice! I'm never that guy who always has my phone out taking photos (almost to a fault, wife is always on me for not having enough pictures of 'moments', so I tell her to handle the photos). Good point about the instruction, which being my first time is definitely the point of the class!

Edit: I highly recommend to pair the phone with the bluetooth OBDII dongle, and display the speed that your car is reporting instead of using GPS. The GPS speed can be laggy at times.
I love this helmet mounted POV I think it's perfect. I wonder though if there was a way to hook up an external mic to the back of the car to pick up the exhaust without attaching a wire to your head. Maybe run two GoPro's? One helmet and one rear? Will RaceChrono allow me to choose which audio track to use?

I'm almost certain that you can but I've never tried this. Would love to know if you do. I really want to do a helmet mounted POV but the only way I can think of is just using the GoPro adhesive mount. What do you guys use?

I use an adhesive mount and it works great. My concern was running an external mic. I don't want the gopro connected to a wire while it's attached to my helmet.

It's a simple setup to get the gopro itself mounted. I can post a pic when I get home tonight.

You're using the adhesive mounts that come with the GoPro right?

You also have to go to your export queue and start the export, then you have to transfer to your photos app.

Sorry, didn't get to mount it again until tonight. Here it is all mounted and ready for a track day tomorrow:

GoPro Helmet Mount by JMG, on Flickr

I have a chin mount setup but IMHO it's too low and I can't see enough of the track itself. Half the screen is steering wheel and dash. This is at least eye-level.
