Driveshaft recall for cars built between March 2nd and September 30th 2016

I recently learned today BMW has issued a recall for all 2016 M3 and M4 cars built between March 2nd and September 30th 2016 for long term reliability issues. My car was built August 2016 so I fall into that category. One GTS owner I know has had it replaced at the dealer.

The SIB is 26 02 18.

First the differentials and now this? What's next?

I asked the dealer to send it to me and they said they couldn't just only give me the info. A letter should be mailed to all owners under the recall.

I went in for service on my '17 f80 zcp and was told about this recall as well. No one had any info on it and they didn't have the parts. They also told me that I would be mailed a letter.

No idea what it is. Does anyone have a link to the service bulletin?

^Wonder if they are replacing with the cf driveshaft or the now current metal unit?

I'd be betting the replacement is the metal driveshaft.

That is what I was imagining it to be, although no one could confirm after continuously asking 5 or 6 people at the dealer.

Read the articles closely, they are only recalling 42 examples. That's only 42 cars.

RE: Recall 18V-XXX: Replace Driveshaft (B26 02 18)
BMW of North America, LLC is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective October 11, 2018) on Model Years 2016-2017 BMW M3 and M4 vehicles that have been produced from March 2, 2016 – September 30, 2016.
Owners will be notified by First Class mail about the Recall and will be instructed to bring their vehicles in for a free repair when parts are available.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law (The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Interesting, my car falls within that production date (7/5/16), other than production date I wonder if there's more criteria to determine if impacted?

To get more info on steel vs CF shaft BMWNA might be able to give you more info. If it's only 42 cars - they may have a surplus of CF shafts to install and could've been something specific to one batch of shafts.

https://www.autoblog.com/2015/12/15/...haft-official/

"The Basics: BMW is recalling 42 examples of the 2015-2016 M3 built from May 30, 2015, to September 2, 2015; the 2016 M4 Coupe made from July 3, 2015, to September 11, 2015; and the 2015-2016 M4 Convertible manufactured from May 29, 2015, to August 4, 2015.

The Problem: The company might not have filled a driveshaft slip joint with grease, and the part can potentially fail over time. If this happens, the vehicles could lose power to the rear axle.

Injuries/Deaths: None reported.

The Fix: BMW dealers will inspect the driveshaft and replace it as necessary."

http://www.beyond.ca/bmw-recalls-m3-...ues/54340.html

"The Bavarian automaker has issued a recall which impacts 42 examples of their M3 (build date May 30, 2015, to September 2, 2015) and the 2016 M4 Coupe (build date July 3, 2015, to September 11, 2015), and the 2015-2016 M4 Convertible (build date May 29, 2015, to August 4, 2015).

The issues has been identified as an improperly manufactured drive shaft; specifically, the drive shaft slip joint was not properly greased during assembly which could cause the part to fail with continued use and result in the loss of power to the rear wheels.

As of today, no deaths or injuries have been reported and linked to this recall. Owners should contact their local BMW dealer for additional information. BMW will begin their recall campaign starting January 8, 2016."

You’re quoting an old recall. The new recall is effective Oct. 11, 2018 whereas your links are for a recall that started on Jan. 8, 2016. The new recall impacts ~2700 cars, not 42.

My car was produced during that period. Just ran the VIN on the BMWUSA website for recall check. It came back empty.

I took my car in today for the recall and it popped up when they scanned my key. The dealer declined to take the car into the shop because they don't have the parts. I told them
It might be a safety issue and they didn't seem to care.

No parts, no recall service. What exactly are you expecting the dealer to do?

I would expect the recall to be communicated to each affected owner. The service can then be scheduled after parts become available. This was how it was done with the rear differential replacement.

If this is indeed a safety issue, not notifying affect owners immediately could get BMW into legal trouble.

I was taking mine car in for normal service today and was also notified of this. I was told I was one of 2600 cars impacted. But he showed me the recall screen and said "see that red X, that means no parts are available". He said the recall is so new that the letter probably hasn't gone out yet. I was going to ask if this is a safety recall, can I get a loaner till the parts are in. Doubt I will but worth the ask. Not sure I will use the car even if they say no till I get the work done.

It will suck losing the CF shaft...
