I just had the same issue as you described about the scraping noise coming from underneath the car. My car is currently sitting at the dealership awaiting for inspections/repair. After reading numerous threads and posts, I suspect it is indeed due to rocks getting stuck between the heat shield and the rotor. Many members on the forum have reported this as well and fixed it by slightly pushing the heat shield a little further away from the rotor for more clearance.

I think most people reported hearing noise from rear, but not front. So just push/bend rear shields (area marked in red) a bit. |

Anyone experiencing such noises with CCB's? Im not trying to waste a $4k rotor due to a bs rock getting trapped between the rotor and backing plate... unless BMW is willing to buy me a new one each time they get damaged...

This noise has been talked about a lot. There are 2 noises. 1-the "tin can" noise that happens when turning slowly right or left because the heat shield shown above is scraping against the emergency brake line. Go to your car and on drivers side rear wheel take a look and you'll see how close these two are to each other.Have dealer clip the emergency brake line or don't use the emergency brake and that noise will go away.
2-The dreaded metal on metal noise, very loud and scary first time you hear it. This noise is caused by a small rock (pebble) that is stuck between the brake rotor (shown above) and the heat shield (also shown above) Like the prior post says just push back the heat shield it is very flimsy, and let the pebble loose. It is hard to imagine that the tiny pebble that comes out could make that noise, but you will no longer have the noise if you do this. |

I have just got this noise now too! The metal scrapping on the floor kinda sound. Shat myself at first thinking that maybe an exhaust tip had come off and was hanging scrapping along the ground. I was on my road so got back to my drive and looked underneath and nothing at all looked out of place.
I will try the heat shield bend shortly and see if that solves it!

hmmm well I played with the heat shields and nothing came out and after a short test drive it seems to have solved the problem. I did get a small clatter during the drive at very low speeds but I poked the brakes hard a couple of times and it was gone again.
Really hope this isn't anything more than a trapped peddle as I have a couple hundred mile round trip tomorrow!

It happened. We removed the rotors. We cleared/cleaned the shields. It doesn't happen. The End. |

My contact in Atlanta dealer said that warranty would not pay on carbon rotors from stone damage!

I have noticed it a lot more as well recently, one with switching back to the stickier summer tires and two, there is a lot of gravel and small stones on the local roads from the town covering snow/ice. I have pushed out the protection shield and so far it still happens but its just really quick, as if the stone falls out almost immediately. I'm sure there is a way to permanently fix this as I only have it happen on one side of the car. I just need to replicate the spacing, etc. from the other side.

Rocks caught in brake shield/hat
Anyone else had this problem with the scraping? Saw a video on YouTube showing it but could not find a post on here. Been to dealer twice for them to clean it all out, both times drivers side rear. They tell me BMW has been documenting this problem and looking for a fix. Odd to me that they would have made the clearances less in this one corner than others but cannot imagine what else could be causing only this one corner to have the issue. Anyone else had any luck with their dealer getting this resolved once and for all? Really getting sick of it....

This is a problem with all m3's and there is no real solution as of right now. Only temporary solution is push back the heat shield behind the rotors and let the rocks fall out. i heard BMW is trying to fix this issue.

Not sure if it would help those with the standard brakes as it's the shield causing the issue not the wheel but I could be wrong. Any excuse for new wheels is good although the standard 19" are excellent |
