BILSTEIN B16 DampTronic with EDC - F80 M3 / F82 M4 Review

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

Yesterday we arrived at the Bilstein Technical Center at 9 AM in Ennepetal, Germany and the conversion begun immediately. We already knew the two mechanics from our last visit with our GTI, very capable and nice people at Bilstein! The assembly took about 2 hours, then we've made a test drive and after that the M4 was measured.

Long story short: the suspension is fantastic. Unfortunately, I can not boast great experiences at racetracks, but the difference to the standard suspension is palpable! The control over the standard EDC works brilliantly. In Comfort mode, the dampers offer despite the maximum possible depth a pleasant ride, absolutely suited for longer tours. In Sport Plus the car is hard as a GoKart. I drove 1500km Autobahn at the weekend, at high speeds the stock M4 suspension felt semi-nice - now its really good!

Conclusion: In my opinion the ideal solution for drivers who want both: daily driver practicality and sporty depth.

Nice write-up and beautiful photos. Looks like the strut/springs are slimmer than stock = more tire clearance compared to K&W CS.

So how many sets can you buy?

I believe they're 30-50mm front and 5-25mm rear. Same spec at the PSS10. I like it better than V3 because it doesn't slam the rear. From OP's alignment photo, the rear drop is very tasteful.

Call Tag, Supreme, and AWE, see how many they will want to buy from you. They have a larger credit line.

OP, you are the envy of this forum. Good stuff. One question though, does the Dramptronic module only have two settings? Comfort and Sport Plus? It'd be nice to have all three settings.

Nice. I hope this kit becomes a serious contender against KW. I don't have EDC, but this kit makes me want it.

No delete module needed because nothing is being deleted. The B16 Damptronic integrates with your OEM EDC so the buttons in the cabin work like OEM. The only difference is that you are using the Bilstein dampers and springs.

Thanks for sharing as I'm very interested in these. I called Bilstein USA about a month ago and they mentioned that these will be available Q1 2016. Hopefully that estimated date is accurate.

As a follow up question, how comfortable is the comfort setting, really? No BS, no 'well, it's comfortable to me, but I like stiff rides', nothing but the truth. How comfortable is it compared to the stock comfort setting?

In other words, would any normal person with a normal back regret getting these on a daily driver that sees track use?

How comfortable is comfort - hard to say, its a personal thing. Certainly its harder then the stock susp, self-evident isn't it? Car is 30-50 mm lower, it must be harder. The point is, with every other coilovers you can't choose - comfortable or stiff ride, its always really stiff. The B16 gives you the choice, a acceptable comfort or the pure race mode.

Comfortable ride or not depends on so much more - wheel size, tire specs, lowering ...

Can you answer one question. Does the bilstein system have "adaptive" function, or is it simply switching between 3 levels of damping?

The adaptive system is constantly adjusting damping force, based on measurements and behaviour of the car. eg it measures velocity of shock movements, as well as integrating that with factors such as g forces, brake force, yaw/pitch, wheel slip etc to try and give optimal damping for the current circumstances. Does the bilstein system have this integration, or is changing from soft / medium / hard simply like adjusting a PSS10 from 1 to 5 to 10 etc?

Very nice looking system though. I'm a big fan of bilstein and have it in my racecars. I'm sure this product is excellent
