Don't you need to re-engage the clutch in neutral (release the clutch pedal) for the engine to stop ?

IIRC, the engine restarts as soon as you press the clutch...

I don't have the F80 yet, but in my F30, yes, I use it all the time. It feels dumb to be sitting there, not moving, and wasting gas. If I'm trying to speed up quickly, sure, I'll defeat the feature, but I'm not doing that very often. It's easily manageable.

I do not use it as I do mostly highway driving and it would rarely engage anyway. So I can't imagine fuel savings would be meaningful.

For those that use it in a "normal" mix of city / highway driving, how much fuel does it save? Curious to know as my perception is that it doesn't save much.

Also, when the car turns off and then on again, does it restart in Efficiency mode even if in Sport or Sport+ when it turns off?

Doesn't the a/c turn off when the cars turns off?

We have never had this feature in any of our cars and we take delivery of our M3 in Munich next month (our first BMW, but not first German vehicle).

It is 102f right now in Texas (cooled down from 105f yesterday brrr) so the need for a/c is essential deep in the heart.

This. If I'm approaching a traffic light and will be stopped for 2-3 minutes, there's no reason not to let the car shut off.

I guess it's cool to be so vehemently against an "eco feature" if you need reassurance on your manliness, though.

Dealer turned it off for me and said "you'll never want this on." He was right.

It also will restart if you move the steering wheel, say in anticipation of making a turn. When I had my ED last week and the Czech Republic and Austria had incredible heatwaves (98+ for four or five days straight), I started the getting message on the driver display that Auto On/Off was disabled. I kept thinking I had done some combination of throttle and brake pedal touches that magically turned off the feature. Only after I went through the manual did I see that the car electronics will disable the feature if it is very hot outside and you are using climate control (ostensibly, to avoid recycling the a/c compressor). Interestingly, turning off Auto Off/On via the button over the ignition causes the disabled indicator to go out. I guess this makes sense logically because if the feature is turned off, then it can't be said to be temporarily disabled.

So if you live in a place like FL and always have the a/c on all the time, start/stop is effectively disabled? Interesting.

It felt more like Arizona last week, but yeah, it seems that way. It did seem to function earlier in the day when it was cooler, but after 1 or 2p when the mid to upper 90s set in, it didn't engage.

You can turn it off.

I have it turned off. Actually when I got my M4 it was already turned off lol. So... Haven't touched that button since

I do play with it a little on my 328i though. When I first got my 3er, and it did this. It scared the hell out of me. Literally I jumped a bit in my seat since it startled me so much. Gotten used to it by now but still...

Tried it once on my M4, it felt weird for the car to literally RWAR to life again lol.

I can't speak much to the A/C as I haven't used it extensively in the vert. However, on the few cool evenings where a heated seat or air collar was active, the car self-disabled the auto stop. I imagine the A/C probably does something similar when it is too hot.

I learn something new everyday on the m3/m4. This feature would have scared the crap out of me if i had not known about it. This m3 will be my first bmw ever.

I'm still in the "break in" stage of my car-- just hit 200 miles today-- and I'll keep it on for the time being. It doesn't really annoy me and I don't believe it puts more wear on the engine.
