Polarized lenses are supposed to remove glare, which is exactly what HUD is. You cannot have both.
Both my Maui Jim and Prada sunglasses wash out HUD, but its still readable (faint). Turn the brightness all the way up, its still somewhat visible.

Had Oakley polarized, but as expected, couldn't see the HUD so I just turned it off.
Got Oakley Holbrook NON-polarized and I can see the HUD perfectly clear and bright. Funny thing is, now that I can see the HUD, I'm realizing that I'm not a big fan--can be kinda distracting. |

Ha, we are in the minority but I kind of feel the same way. I very rarely look at the HUD as it is more natural for me to glance at the dash. A lot of people swear they will never have a car without HUD again but it doesnt do much for me

I love the design of those, but got a pair with the Daily Prizm lenses and couldn't see the HUD so I sent them back.

Ray-Ban New Wayfarers non-polarized, Matte Black frames and Orange Flash lenses. Matches my car. No half-assed solutions like angling the display, tilting your head, or turning up the brightness. I can see the HUD like it was designed to be seen.

It's not one of the use directed variants - road, trail, golf, deep sea, everyday, etc?

I have these and while they are not polarized, they do a beautiful job of blocking any glare. I used them while I lived in south florida as well. http://www.go-optic.com/prada-sport-...BU4xoC7uLw_wcB

I think it depends on direction of polarization. I found that some polarized lenses washed out HUD and others washed out the iDrive screen.
I got a pair of nonpolarized Oakleys at Nordstrom after going out to car and verifying they were nonpolarized. HUD is one of my favorite features. Not just speed but changing radio stations or songs and caller id too. Almost insisted my wife get it on Jag but digital speed display is almost as good. Plus the Jag HUD display wasn't as sharp as BMW |

Just to clarify. BMW actually screwed up on this. They didn't compensate for the huds reflection in the window. All they had to do was change its orientation so that the reflected polarization was in line with the nav and main instrument cluster.
Then just like almost all LCD displays some glasses would work and others wouldn't at that angle. Different lens manufactures use different angles. It is possible to find a set of glasses that uses a polarization angle between the hud and nav angles that could kind of work for both. The problem with BMW and hud has to do with 2 different angles being used in the same vehicle. Using the rotate on the hud does absolutely nothing because it does not change the lcd's orientation. Just the picture on the screen. My original solution was to use non polarized Wiley X Brick glasses and non polarized Bell helmet visor. That works as expected. Also I "May" have an easy hack to fix this issue. I just want to try a few things before putting out the solution. |
