OP, Chances are the vehicle stored a misfire fault. While scanning the faults the tech will see that is was logged during "low fuel level". I would say 90% of them typically clear that fault, test drive the vehicle and if the light does not come back they ignore it and that's it.

Don't worry about it too much.

dayum im pretty sure if the car is intelligent enough to vary boost and all that other shit IDK what im talking about...I am pretty sure it is smart enough to turn the engine off when it thinks it don't got enough gas. It isn't a survivalist vehicle thats runs to the last drop?

Relevent: My sisters 4er has gone through two fuel tanks. constantly lies about how much gas is left

Well, if the OP drove 100 miles while on his phone, and passing who knows how many gas stations, with the low fuel warning clearly illuminated on the dash and chiming, he obviously wasn't paying attention. Since his username is lazybones18, maybe he needs someone to state the obvious to him.

Yes I'm probably old enough to be his dad. If my 18-year-old son does this I'd make him pay for that repair if BMW charges for the work.

Running out of gas is bad for the fuel pump and obviously not good for the engine if it causes the mixture to run lean. Pulling into a gas station and running out would not hurt the engine at all.

The car will specifically note and log that the error occurred with low fuel - in fact some faults specifically are thrown only with low fuel.

If the car is fine, clear the error codes and move on.
Dealer visit not necessary. If after clearing errors faults return, then there is a larger issue.

Always make it a point to fill up before the 1/8 mark.

I had a similar thing happen; I was low on gas (~ 10 mile indicated range) and going up a steep hill near my house, the car sputtered and went into limp mode (revs and speed restricted to 25 mph). Pulled over turned off and on the car and the message disappeared with no issues since.

Granted, but he's a big boy. No need for you or anybody to give him shit for it. Like he has stated he learned his lesson. You guys make it seem like he killed an innocent animal while driving without gas. Chill.
