Obviously it matters how many miles is on the car when buying a used BMW, but I was more so curious on if it's worth paying more for a car with less miles (same packages, same color, etc.). Looking to buy a '17/'18 M4.

Does it matter if the car has 5k miles vs 25k miles vs 40k miles on it, in the sense that is it worth paying significantly more to buy a car with fewer miles on it? At what miles did you guys see significant repair bills?

Looking at a '17 M4 with 25k miles CPO

vs.

a '17 M4 with 8k miles

vs.

a '18 M4 with 25k miles

I'd be paying $5k+ more for the '17 M4 with 8k miles and also $5k+ more for the '18 M4 with 25k miles. (They all have the same packages, same color interior/exterior, everything is the same)

EDIT: Thinking of pulling the plug on a M4 coupe, white exterior/red interior, 23.2k miles, 1 owner, CPO (warranty until Dec 2021), sunroof, exec package, drivers assistance pkg, 2 minor accidents to rear bumper for $48k (from a bmw dealership).

Good deal or no?

Lower miles is always better. But 25k on a '17 CPO isn't too bad.

How many miles will you be putting on the car in a year?

I'm probably going to drive it a lot. I'm thinking 15-20k miles a year.

Honestly, not really a big deal with the miles.

More on service history; accident history, and maybe get one with a fixed crankhub or leave budget to get that and other fixes like the charge pipes.

Get a ppi done for sure

Miles matter the most to me, almost even more than the year. You can always extend your warranty but you can't reduce your miles, without illicit activity. More miles just means more wear on the interior, seats, potential dings on exterior, etc. And most importantly, more unknown history of whatever the previous owner(s) may have done.

Yeah no definitely I agree with all you guys, it's just hard when buying pre-owned finding all those things.

I'm thinking of pulling the plug on a '17 ZCP M4 coupe, white exterior/red interior, 23.2k miles, 1 owner, CPO (warranty until Dec 2021), sunroof, exec package, drivers assistance pkg, 2 minor accidents to rear bumper for $48k (from a bmw dealership). Not sure if that's a good deal or not.

If you get the 2018, remember to pay the transfer fee for free scheduled maintenance.

My F80 had minimal miles and was mint when I sold it but it experienced the hard break in style for the engine and a decent number of DE. You never know.

Buy from a trusted owner you know or get new. Just my $0.02

Good luck with the purchase.

Not to worry on CPO vehicle...

Crank hub and charge pipes is a forum paranoia thing on modified cars that void the manufacturer warranty.

OP

The CPO M4 sounds to be best option.

If you're gonna throw money at the car get 4 brand new tires of your choice.

Will give you peace of mind with no spare tire!

There have been at least a couple threads on how bulletproof the F8x cars are, even the ones with higher miles on them. The mileage spread you're considering isn't that much in the scheme of things.

my brother's 15 M4 with 48K miles has had zero issues. literally zero. my 16 M4 has very low mileage but still zero issues. the consensus on this forum seems to be that these cars are very robust.
regarding which to buy: within the warranty period cars with fewer miles will have suffered less from Free BMW No-maintenance.
regarding dealer (CPO) vs private seller: no question, private seller. CPO'd cars are almost always off lease and therefore driven by 'owners' who had little to no incentive to take care of the car. I once spent months searching for a CPO'd E92 and can attest that many of those 'owners' couldn't have cared less.
In the case of a private sale, if you're patient and willing to travel a bit, you'll be rewarded with a stack of maintenance records as thick as your wrist. a good source for such cars is the Roundel classified section, but there are others.

Maintenance records, imo, are everything. more important even than mileage because they are not only an insight into the mechanical condition of the car but also the owners attitude towards the car.

anyway, good luck and have no second thoughts, these cars are just brilliant.

Why would you even look at a car that has had ANY accidents (2 "small" rear end accidents in this case that were reported by Carfax which is not even that accurate) when there are tons of these out there with NO accident history? Honestly baffles me. I bet you can find a similarly priced car with NO accident history. Plus, the one you are looking at has a sunroof which is a downgrade from the carbon fiber roof that sets it apart from your average 3 series!

I think you should be patient and get a CPO with no accidents.
Unless the dealer can provide proof of what type of accident occurred on the vehicle of interest.

And if you go non CPO you are saving yourself under 2-3K. Based on repair history I've seen on these forums you most likely won't need over 2k in repairs during the CPO period.
