2018 iDrive (CarPlay) buggy?

Hi all,

I recently bought a 2018 build M4 Comp 2nd hand with 20k's on it.

Im running idrive version:
Telephone: TB-005.013.032
Media: MB-005.012.001
HMI: MB-006.007.032

Iphone XS 13.3.1 (clean of crappy apps and performing well)

I bought the CarPlay update and seem to be having a bunch of bugs with it.
Its just not silky smooth like it should be, sometimes laggy, annoyingly split screen is permanently stuck on even when it's deactivated, Spotify crashes, leaving it playing on the phone and not through the car until I turn off the car and restart it again (i.e. break the link).

Is there an update that im missing?

The 4G update seems to be disabled on my car, only allowing update option via USB unless this is normal?

I would try updating software of the headunit/car to the newest one.

www.bmw.com/update for the USB update method.

I also complained of rebooting head unit and BMW updated my entire cars firmware (the "iStep"). This thorough process also updated and refreshed the head unit software beyond the version the USB update offered me and things are mostly well now. Wireless iDrive is not as reliable as being plugged I heard as well.

At least one of those is not a bug. There is no full screen CarPlay. It's always only 2/3 of the screen.

Thanks heaps for the replies!
Yeah, I have already updated via the USB update link above.

Bugger re: no full screen in CarPlay! 👎
Google maps could really use that extra width and Spotify just doesn’t look right.

I have seen another m4 that had Microsoft office installed (I was like omg - why!). That car was very clearly running a different version of software to mine - certainly looked newer too. I swear it also Had full screen CarPlay.
Do I just take it to bmw to get them to run an update?

Is everyone else’s wireless update disabled? Or just mine?

There is no official full screen carplay in idrive 6, but hopefully there is a mod that could be done and you end up with a fullscreen CarPlay in iDrive 6

For all those wanting full screen apple carplay... https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1563454

There's a thread on coding for full screen CarPlay here.

ime you really need a touchscreen to use carplay/android auto effectively

using the control wheel is painful, it's easier just to stay in the bmw menu and hey siri whatever you want to do with the phone

i also did the full screen mod, google earth looks cool, but it's a novelty imo, and if you're gonna novelty, put in the dash binnacle like audi

disclaimer: i haven't embraced waze yet, but i understand that's the best nav app to use

Waze is great for speed trap and camera warnings. Never fails.

Thanks all - awesome info.
Apparently I have K firmware on my car. Currently researching how to get that sorted so that I can full screen CarPlay.
I haven’t used waze before but I do hear it’s awesome too!

IOS 12 was rock solid for me for all functions regardless if car play or BMW integrated.

Moved to IOS 13 on a iPhone 8 or 11 and I have endless issues. Most predominantly the Siri integration where it is very hit and miss.

With Siri I found out that if you hold the voice button - Siri is activated. If you only short press it, BMW’s voice control is activated.
Hopefully that helps there? Mr rizk

Thanks snezy. You are correct it requires a long press. The issue is you see the connection initiation on the phone as the car picture appears but then instantly disappears. It then does not allow for Siri input. Try again 15 mins later and then works then doesn't etc.

Turn BT off and on again on iPhone then may work. It is not a pairing issue. iOS 13 changed the BT implementation as seen other products having connection issues.
