Wondering how the heated function will affect the Alcantara on this custom wheel?

BMW will not install steering wheel heating on ANY of their OEM Alcantara wheels for some reason - I'm assuming it has to do with incompatibility of heat & the material

I had my steering wheel modified by meinlenkrad in Germany in the summer. Works great.
Time will tell how the material will hold up. They started offering it so I went for it. I had them cover my original wheel too so I have a spare.

Heated steering wheel is the best in -22 degrees C like today. I did not want to lose this feature with a BMW wheel.

They could not do a centre marker however since they told me that the heating element would have to come out for it as they would need to modify the steering wheel for it.

The heating works fine with the alcantara. I tried it before. It feels the same as if you hold your leather wheel with cloth around it. It heats up the same way underneath, it just doesn't feel as toasty as leather for obvious reasons. Alcantara feels neutral in temperature when it's cold or hot in the car; therefore heating isn't as big of a deal on them.

Nice offering OP, super tempting.

I suspect this would retrofit into my 328 M Sport steering wheel flawlessly.

just curious, how are you able to active the heating back into this wheel?

My wheel was dealer installed, so obviously they told me (and according to official install instructions) the heat isn't activated. Is there still something you can plug into to get heat?

the stock wheel has heating, the alcantara material was wrapped around it. I've tested this wheel on my car, it works 100%. It heats up the same way, just takes slightly longer for the heat to transfer through it to your hands.

Yes. The alcantara wheels don't have it.

Alcantara wheels do have it if they were wrapped using an oem wheel that had this feature initially. This wheel has the heated wire mesh underneath the leather. The heating works 100% the same as before. There is a wire coming out of the leather that plugs directly into your car's heating adapter (black plastic box) if the car is equipped with it. You can see the wire in the pics (bottom area), it's brown with a white housing.

I understand you wrapped your leather wheel with alcantara and the heat comes through, but the alcantara wheels that BMW sells does not come with it.

The answer to the question above is there no connection/plug or way to enable heat on your alcantara wheel unless you wrap your leather wheel like the OP.

I thought the question was for this wheel in particular. I've updated my main post with more info to answer this question should it arise again.

Given the fact that the diameter has increased, would there be a problem putting the trim pieces back?

Not at all. I test-fit this wheel and everything fit 100% as before.
