G8X LCI steering Wheel in F8X

Hello all,

We’re currently developing a direct retrofit kit for the G8X LCI steering wheels into the F8X platform.

We wanted to gauge interest in this product to see if this is something that would be of interest.

This will not be a cheap retrofit as we use OEM parts to achieve this but with that all out of the way I’ll explain a little bit more of what went into this.

Firstly, the difference in steering wheels isn’t all that much and seems like a bolt right up type of deal, however, since the M1 and M2 buttons are seperate from the left button pad, we had to develop a system to wire that in to work like factory.

The next part is dependent on options, if your car has steering wheel heating, we made the steering wheel retain that function while not having the button on the wheel like the G series cars do and instead keep the button on the column to work like factory.

Then there’s the wiring for the vibration motor of your car has that option as well, and the removal or addition of paddles if your car is a DCT or manual.

Visually, we’re able to re cover the wheel in any finish that is desired but the standard options that will be available are the OEM leather finish, or OEM alcantara both with the red 12 o clock stripe and M colored stitching.

Let us know what you guys think! We’re hoping to start offering this within the next month or 2 depending on interest.

Can you do alcantara with a blue stripe instead of red?

Thanks for attempting this. I assume you’d need to use the G8x airbag? Please alleviate any concerns we might have of this not working in a collision. This would always be on my mind for sure.

With the airbag needing to be included, I imagine this would be prohibitively expensive. To me, the G8x wheel really isn’t all that either. I think these would be a very tough sell. The F8x already has a lot of good OEM options, let alone aftermarket.

This is a really good point I forgot to mention in initial post. We are going to make sure the airbag functions just like OEM wether it plugs right in and works or if coding is involved. If this doesn’t end up working, we most likely won’t offer it at all because that is a very big concern and could be a very big liability.

Though at this time I don’t think we will be offering the airbag with the wheel due to shipping restrictions and what not so the customer would have to source their own wether it’s new or used. With that being said, we will include whatever is nessacary to make it “plug and play” but we don’t offer coding services if this is needed.

At this moment we don’t know this yet as the first prototype is being finished up.

Thanks!

I'm interested based on the following:
1) It's true plug and play and requires no coding
2) You lose ZERO functionality of ANYTHING
3) Price
4) I'd rather source my own wheel and buy your harness

To answer your questions

1) we’re working on this and aiming for it to be a TRUE plug and play where no coding is required to make it easier for the “weekend DIYer” and not to mention to save the cost of coding.

2) yes, we wouldn’t do it any other way, in terms of retrofitting, we truly believe in keeping all functionality otherwise it defeats the purpose adding something while getting rid of something, if that makes sense. We’re also working on custom harnesses for the carbon bucket seats retrofit into the F platform. But that’s still quite far away from being a product we can offer.

3) stay tuned for this

4) unfortunately we wouldn’t offer this as an option for customers, we would sell the whole wheel with our internals.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know feel free to message!

I would also add a stitch option for the airbag.

Will you be able to offer this as a race wheel as well? Lots of us have this steering wheel and would be a shame to loose it.

Did you mean like in the post picture? If so yes possibly would could make the airbag cover an option which would require the customer to swap covers but usually the G8X airbags are already stitched.

Could you elaborate a bit more about what you mean by “race wheel”?

This is the wheel which BMW did with the race lights and small screen. CT Carbon do this wheel for the G Series as don’t think BMW did an official one for this series but might be wrong.

The control module in the steering wheel would need adaption for what you are doing as similar to a company that offers for the Porsche wheels as it maps button inputs from new wheel back to the car as the old one.

I’ve done this on my Porsche and module was 300 pounds. Not sure you need people to buy the whole wheel from you but could be an option.

Thanks for the picture! I didn’t realize they were referring to that wheel. That’s a great point and we could definitely looking to that as well. I think that would be a good option to have again depending on interest.

I could bring that up to the rest of the team to see if this is something we could possibly offer.

The whole wheel would most likely to be changed as it would most likely be the F series screen system in the G series wheel if that makes sense so it would only be applicable in this application when we’re trying to retrofit this wheel into a F series car.

Is the regular g80 wheel an option? Not a fan of the flat bottom ones. Any updates?

Yes those would be available too!, we were actually supposed to get our first prototype parts in to assemble the first test wheel, however we opened the box after receiving from shipping and it was empty…

So we’re a bit delayed on timeline but we’re going to get more ordered and on the way. We’ll keep everyone updated when we get more info on this retrofit!

Thanks! I wish we had more to update about, but since the package got lost, our prototype wheel parts are somewhere in the wild 😂. So we’re working on another one which we should have an update, late February!

Interested! If that helps

Not having next and previous buttons on the F80 wheel bothers me like crazy lol.
I don’t have touchscreen, so going next and previous songs is simple with a scroll up/down but a next / previous button is so much more simplistic.

Granted who doesn’t like retrofits of newer things on older cars?
