Target Coolant - Oil Temp Affected

Hey everyone,

Got a strange issue that’s been happening very intermittently recently, more so the last couple days.

Randomly when I’m driving, I’ll lose oil tempature. It doesn’t fall off a cliff but normally itll average 105C/220F (cruising in efficient/sport) and drops down to 95C/203F out of nowhere.

Looking at BimmerLink, the target coolant temp usually sits at 109C/228F but no matter the driving mode, it targets 80C/176F. At idle it’ll target target 109C/228F but once you press the accelerator, it goes back down to 80C. The fan is calling at 50% while moving (I imagine to bring temps down)

After doing a couple pulls, it’ll go back to 109C/228F while cruising and stay there maintaining temp.

If anyone has any thoughts on how to remedy this, that would be a great help.

I had that kind of issue, and it seemed to be because I used low octane petrol (SP95 in Europe). When back to SP98, after a while, it came back to normal behaviour

Hey man, this happened in multiple ambient temps, from 10C/50F upto 25C/77F.

I have a similar issue...my car is usually at 95C (203F) oil temp and around 100C (212F) coolant temp at any ambient temperature.

However sometimes it will overcool and stay at 88C (190F) oil temp and 80C (176F) coolant no matter how I drive it...and I also hear the fans overworking. My guess is sometimes the car's cooling fans are always on as if I have it in sports plus mode.

(I do have a Mosselman oil thermostat, stage 1 BM3)

It goes away on its own randomly, but always comes back for a few days. Then goes back to normal. Hope this thread gets more attention.

Text book same issue.
I don’t see how the oil thermostat would cause the fans to go into +50% operation

Not sure what you mean by +50% operation, but if im in traffic the temps start going up a bit, then as soon as I start moving again, they drop and quite fast too and you’ll hear the fan wind down as I come to a stop, meaning they were working the entire time im moving. The strangest part about this is that my car will randomly stop doing this after 4-5 days and go back to normal.

If you use bimmerlink, you can monitor “Duty Cycle Electric Fan” which shows the % in which your fan is running.

I noticed that in traffic, fan would be 10% or so but the second I started moving, pressing the accelerator, that the fan would go to 50% lowering all my temps.
