Differences between 2015 and 2018 M4

Hi Everyone,

Was hoping someone could tell me what the main differences are between the 2015 and 2018 M4 and if those differences are worth getting the 2018. I have notice some 2018s are going for around $50k and the 2015 model years in the low $40s.

Thanks!

2015 will try to kill you.

2018 is more subtle.

Thanks for the response. Does not seem the $7k premium is worth it but the lights are nice. Not sure they are $7k nice though.

You can get the software updated on the 2015 and it'll then be the same.

This is an interesting post...I have not driven either one. Could you elaborate a little more?

2015 was pre bmw fixing the power delivery.

Early 2015 and 2016 models are extremely peaky and spiky, lack of traction + torque tidal wave makes them a real handful.

After 2017 they reprogrammed the software to be a lot more linear and easier to manage throttle.

In 2015 it would have cost you 233 Bitcoins to buy a new 2015 $70k M4.
Today a Used 2018 $50k M4 would cost you just .9 Bitcoin.
Go with the Used 2018 for .9 btc. Its the better car and will cost you less.
cheers mate.

2015 versus 2018 M4

I'd consider mileage before model year when factoring costs. A low mileage 15 for a reasonable price would be a better buy than a higher mileage 18. Personally the LCI is not a factor. And, while I've never driven a 2018 F82, I do like the power delivery of the 2015. That's why I bought it.

The main differences I think are

1) Idrive 6 vs Idrive 4
2) CarPlay Available in 2018 as subscription (however subscription is gone and is free now)
3) Optional ICON headlights with executive package
4) Backup Camera is standard
5) LCI Tail Lights/Headlights
6) Anti-Dazzle no longer codable with the LCI hardware
7) Stitching on Dash for a “more luxury feel”.
8) Updated Black Seat Emblems to prevent cracking
9) No more CF drive shaft
10) Passenger Mirror no longer dimming
11) Bedplate and Friction Disk Update for crankhub “issue” in the S55 engine.
12) As people stated, tuning is different from 2015 to 2018.
13) Text messages no longer readable in ID6 because of apple carplay.
14) Turn signal no longer codable to 5 blinks, max is 3 on 2018.
15) Top down view is available in reverse if That was the last setting used. 2018 defaults to backup camera.
16) I think the touchscreen came back in 2018.

If I were you, just get a 2015 with everything option ticked in a 6MT (if possible).

The bed plate update did literally nothing to help the crankhub issue btw OP.

If anything people speculate that the 2018's have it even worse, but statistically it looks like 2015-2020 are pretty identical in terms of chances of spun crankhub

I got a 2016 instead of a 2018 and I'm satisfied, just wish I had the nicer lights + carplay. Can all be done aftermarket though.

As for point 18, touchscreen is only available in m4 not m3 for 2018+ cars. No idea why

I made the switch back in November after seeing the G82 disaster which I'd been saving up for. My thoughts in the thread below:

I've since changed to full KW V3s, got rid of the HAS kit almost immediately lol.

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1779443

Wait, did the 18s *really* lose the CF driveshaft?!? I didn't know that, thought that didn't happen until 19. Holy crap what a bummer if so.

You’re not missing much without Apple CarPlay. I think BMW Idrive is better and also having your Navi showing up in the HUD is a nice touch.

Thanks everyone for your comments, i appreciate it. Below are the specs of the two cars I am considering....

2015 - Austin Yellow (black interior), 28,843 miles for $42,350, dual clutch, independent dealership (3 owners....next owner will be the 4th)

2018 - Yas Marina Blue (Sandstone interior), 34,500 miles for $49,900, dual clutch (private sale with CPO warranty...2 owners...next owner will be the 3rd)

I know both colors are a little unique, but I am have had a silver car, a grey car, and currently a black car. Wanted something different and these two are my two favorites for the M4.

Also, what is the "crank hub" issue. Sorry if this is a well known item that I am not aware of. I guess asking forum members these questions is a good way to learn about any issues these cars have. I heard that these engines are pretty solid, is that not the case?

Hate typing in addresses manually into the iDrive, so time consuming.

Easier to use the app and send it to the car. Also think you can use voice with iDrive but don’t think I’ve tried it as I usually use the app when I need nav directions.

Also for good post earlier above with the detailed differences, messages are still visible in iDrive if you don’t use CarPlay.

There is a CarPlay mmi box on aliexpress for 200 and some change that will give your 2015 the same CarPlay
