New Software update available

If you have not updated your software in your M3 for while (in the last year or so), looks like there are some new ones released on their website.

Go to :
https://www.bmwusa.com/owners/software-updates.html

UPD09051.bin = update file for my M3

The USB port in the car is quite picky on which USB stick it likes. So far, SanDisk formatted on MS-DOS FAT32 seems to do the job. I tried a no-name USB one and it was not detected.

What are the upgrades?

They fixed the Music media device bug. I used to get my iPod repeating the first 2 seconds for 10 times before it becomes normal when I first startup the car. It does not do that anymore.

And more ... (you can download the upgrade list after you type in your VIN) into link above.

Yep - same here. I've tried many times before using different browsers and finally gave up. I'm not sure why this is the case -- does anyone know if this the BIN file is hosted elsewhere?

Wouldn't the dealer perform the update for free? Or is this something that is only self administered?

That's interesting.
What browser and version are you using?

I used Safari 14.0.3 on MacOS 11.2.3 without any issues.

I thought they would but they did not.
I just got my brake fluids flushed like 3 weeks ago and they did no such thing.
Mind you, my car is still under the 3 years maintenance program.

I use Firefox -- it didn't throw an error, but nothing happens when I clicked on the 'download' button.

Website says my car is up to date.

I have a 2018 BMW M3 Competition.

How does it know from my VIN no.? Service history?

The versions of the software in your car is fully verifiable by the software itself.
It's easy to compare those versions with that of the latest versions in the BMWusa server, via cell connection.

If the version # match, it will say you don't need to install upgrade.

As Telsa has already trailblazed this path, I'd expect the auto industry to gravitate towards self-upgrades, self-download (in the background) and perhaps notify us to install after it is already downloaded and ready.
It's a simple thing to do since most BMW vehicles have cell interface.

The G8X series BMWs already has an auto-update feature. I prefer the manual way because auto-updates can drive updates to the DME which impacts any tune you may have. I've seen tuners recommend disabling this feature as a result.

May be it was the year of manufacturing as indicated on the sticker under your car's hood ?
