Ah, sorry.

You can find some nice '16 991.1 GTS, and even a '17 991.2 S if you want to go the turbo route for under 100k.

I figure about 25k depreciation in 2 years for these cars, a little worse than the m4 used.

I don’t think a 991.1 GTS is going to depreciate much if at all in 2 years if you find one around 95-105. These cars are pretty limited and quite special from any angle you look at them and being last of the flat 6 NA motors these will remain valuable.

I do think a 991.2 might end up being 10-15k over two years though given the 992 is coming, albeit with an 8k increase in price and increase in options. A nicely equipped 992S is going to be 140-150k out the door assuming the average amount of options. My 991.2S has a sticker of 121k (2017 model year).

Porsche GT cars are all street cars with full interior, so I don't see why you can't drive them 40 miles round trip. It's not like they are stripped down to the metal with the seat bolted to the floor

You'll need to move the LWB back to exit more easily but that's the only compromise I can see (borrowed by brother's gt4 for a week and it was very easy to live with).

My $0.02 on the m4 is why bother because you lose practicality vs m3 without any sort of performance gain. I guess if you get a great deal or really like the look?

I think the 991.1 NA engine cars will be valuable over the long term, but to manual (vs pdk) cars, especially lower mileage ones. In the short term these cars are depreciating as is typical for a late model 911, it will take a few more years for the cars to bottom out in depreciation before they will start to appreciate, imo.

was driving home sitting in traffic yesterday behind a 991.2 T

I'm starting to see M3 CS with heavy discounts on the east coast. Like $16k off msrp and then $3500 lease incentive.

my advice

.. get a beater car for under 5-6k to take to work. slap some liability insurance on it. fill it up with 87 and call it a day. this would also let you get something more exotic to use on nice days and keep the miles down for depreciation.

thats what i do. $6k civic i take to work (80 mile round trip). 458 for fun/weekends. f80 for everything in between, sometimes work, and for the manual itch. Hard to find any exotic with a manual these days.

you could also splurge a bit on the beater and get like a civic si or golf gti. cheap doesn't mean boring.

That’s interesting advice. Does it bother you when you are driving the beater and the damn thing is so slow? You have quite the extreme in performance.

I work for a rental company and get a company car. We do mostly premium rentals so we have a pretty nice fleet: BMW, Benz, Mini, LR, Jag, etc.

I take my company car 3-4 times a week, and every freaking day I take it, I tell myself I wish I had the M3. I couldn't even imagine with a true beater...

for the most part it doesn't. In my opinion there are no slow cars, just slow drivers My commute is 95% highway anyway so once im up to speed its fine.

I also don't have to worry about road debris / rock chips, people parking next to me, getting too much attention (this always happened in my estoril 335, the car sticks out like a sore thumb to cops and i'd be getting tint and no front plate tickets often).

With my civic I can just fly under the radar and look like joe schmo. I have a V1 in the windshield and just set the cruise at 85, and listen to a podcast on the way to work.

We’ve discussed it before but EV daily + pure sports car is the a good solution.

NC Miata, s2k etc are good beaters too, but more like $15k instead of $6k

That being said if someone is thinking of 458 caliber cars, doesn’t a $45k f80 somewhat fall into “daily beater”

true. it could be used like a beater, just like I used my 335i. But the depreciation will add up over time. making the guy who bought a cheap daily win out in the long run.

And then what do I want to do if I want to sell the f80? I can't sell private party and wait for another daily driver with the right spec to pop up on autotrader. trading in to the dealer is pissing money away too . I'd have to DD my 458 80 miles a day which is out of the question.

Plus a lot of the metallic F80 colors are near impossible to match if repainting is needed. We get snow and hail here in the Midwest too. OP lives in cali so he probably doesn't have to worry about some of those

Yes, that’s true. Cheaper daily is cheaper to operate for sure.

I mean, having a “toy” car and the opportunity cost of locking capital up that way is pissing money away too so it just depends on how far you want to take things

I test drove the 718 GTS before I sold my 981 CS.

The four cylinder was underwhelming and a deal breaker. The sound is fine for a 35k japanese car. For a >90k german car it’s beyond unacceptable.

Get the car you want. Make a list of the type of vehicle qualities you like or would like and find the best fit, price is only one factor.

M3/m4 is a great car, I’ve loved mine for 4+ years now.

The CS you should be able to easily get upwards of 18-20% off as they are just sitting on lots. I recently saw a 125k sticker M4 with 97 miles on the clock sell for 85k. It was titled but a 40k drop for one month of ownership for a limited edition car should tell you something.
