It is true I do a lot of high speed driving whether it is the fwy or city roads. I mean, how can you not in a car such as ours? Lol I'll post some pics shortly. Going to take it to a detailer and have it addressed and then clearing it all. I hope this thread helps out future owners to have learned from me the hard way hahah

I circled the actual chips as the black spots are just road grime, but I figured I'd leave it to show you how the area(s) get sprayed. Keep in mind LSB is a solid non-metallic paint. From the way this is happening, in another 10k miles or so it will look like Yas Marina...

And this is not from parking your car next to a road where it can get hit from debris? You have this on both sides of the car?
Do you drive a lot on highways with lots of bends/curves? |

Now I understand why manufactures' use metallic paints. It sure does hide many of these smaller pitting type of chips. |

It's unavoidable no matter how much clear bra one uses (unless you wrap the entire car). My E92 was wrapped almost completely and one day I noticed a rock chip on the fuel door of all places! It's inevitable. I did get my F82 wrapped but I fully expect some chips eventually.

Here are all available patterns for our cars.. I am getting a pillars which apparently extend all the way back to cover fender area in question here. Roof and rear bumper are also under consideration..
Small correction, front fenders, bumper and mirrors are missing from this pic cause I already bought those.. Lol

I have an appt on Thursday to get the front fenders and potentially the rest of the car cleared (doors, rear bumper, trunk, A-pillar thru rear quarter) I decided to buff out some minor scuffs to the clear coat on the fenders and doors (it appears that the wife, kids, or MIL have brushed up against the car walking thru the garage with their purses and left minor marks that aren't visible in daylight but only under LED lighting). I was was fortunate (or maybe unfortunate lol) to have been trained by Richard Lin of ShowCarDetailing so I know too well how to find these imperfections. I never thought I would even care this much but I guess this M3 is special to me since its LSB and my first brand spanking new M.
Anywho, I was able to hit the rear fenders with Meguiars 105 and a white pad where those chips had started to appear (I have given up on the rocker panels remaining perfect as no one will ever notice unless you get down on your hands and knees). I can say from 3 ft away (standing height looking down) you cannot see the chips. Only with your face 1-2 ft away will (bent down, closely examining) you see there are minor chips. |

19k miles on my f80, drove through one PA winter last year (tons of rock salt on the roads), completely stock just protected the paint with Sonax.
I've got lots of front bumper rock chips, a few on the front fenders/hood, and really pretty much NONE on my rear wheel arches/rear rockers. I'm AW, and I get that you can't see divots in AW nearly as well, but I don't have ANY actual rock chips back there. And I detail my cars - so I get very up close and personal, especially in that area, since the stock clear film is nasty around the edges and looks yellow. |

The installer did say XPel Ultimate was the best available and has the longest warranty (10 years). I think you'll be safe with XPel Ultimate. |

Since my car was delivered a few weeks ago, from day 1, I have been hearing little pebbles/rocks hitting sides of the car. Seems like this is common issue. Just the way car is engineered.

Any larger protective film is going to protect better. My factory film is ever so slightly yellow - not seen from 10 feet, definitely seen by 3 feet. And my car is garaged. ALOT. So it's surprising.

Just got my fenders (front and back) done and finally peace of mind. Was well worth it. Added a section of XPel to the front rocker for good measure.

I know by asking this question is blasphemy, but do they make splash/mud guards for the M? Will the F30's fit the M?
I'm thinking more function over fashion, also, doesn't look too bad with darker cars. |

Having the same issue too but I think it's inevitable. I initially thought these black specks were from the tires so I bought some Mother's 3R spray to remove them. Most of it came off but upon further inspection, the left over specks were paint chips and not debris. I drive to work in an industrial area so I'm not surprised to see these.

[QUOTE=TuckerM3;17813694]Most of the spots look to be clear coat damage. I think I am beyond putting protective film on. The factory film is already beat up. Both sides look the same.
I took ED on June 8th of an M3 the same color as yours (not the color I ordered, but a whole other story) and the rear panels look exactly like the picture you posted after 3,000 miles. I could hear pebbles hitting at low speeds, but didn't find the chips when I initially looked. I washed the car the other day and thought it was asphalt means we went down some roads under construction, but when I tried to remove it, was shocked to understand it was all chips. Glad to find this out now, because the day my the correct color car arrives (LSB), I'm driving it straight to the shop to get the whole car Xpel'd. |
