At 5400 miles and already going in for drive belt failure

Started the car today and heard a faint rattle that went away quickly. Drove about 6 miles and heard a lot of rattles so I stopped and smelled plastic burning and smoke coming out of the hood, not a lot but noticeable enough to yank my 8 year old out of the car. Shut the car off and pooped the hood. Only thing I noticed was that all the drive belts where shredded.

It was a sad sight.

Next time don't "poop" the hood.

Scratched wheels from those straps are going to be sad too.

That came to my mind as well when I saw the straps. My wheels are painted (factory), there's no way I'd let them tie straps to the wheels.

OP: hopefully it's not a big deal. I had to change my steering rack at 4500 miles.

Didn’t think about the straps...damn it.

Now that I think about it and looked at the belt diagram, it broke both of them.

Damn. Sorry to hear. I hope the fix is relatively easy and there's no engine damage.

Sorry to hear about this. As others have said hopefully they get it figured out and back on the road quickly. As long as you don't tune it the S55s have been historically very reliable. I know that doesn't matter much right now, but again hopefully after this it is smooth sailing for years/miles to come.

Easy fix. My SA called said that the tensioner bearing failed which caused the tensioner to disintegrate taking both belts, radiator and fan. Should have it back today or tomorrow morning.

Glad to hear it'll be back soon! How should the wheels be secured? Always wondered about this. Had an Audi flat bed towed once(big surprise I know&#128514 Anyways wheels were scratched and I traded it shortly after the catastrophic water pump failure.

My wife's previous 335is Coupe had to be flatbedded to the dealer several times. They secured the car with the same type of tie-down straps. I never saw any damage to the wheels from these straps. This is the common way to secure vehicles on a flatbed truck. Have you ever actually had a car flatbedded and had the wheels secured with straps and experienced scratches or did you just pull that out of your ass?

The towing instructions for my Z4 M Roadster indicates that towing hooks should be used when flatbedding the car. They're not supplied with the car and I found them on a tow truck supply website. They're very similar to the screw-in tow hook but instead of the screw thread, they have a disc that slots into the chassis. You have to remove the jack pads from the jacking points and then insert the tow hooks into the slot in the position where the jack pads were. I've never seen these for any other car.

This is perplexing. A tensioner locking up would have nothing to do with spinning the hub. Keep us updated! Subscribed.

You're right that it may not damage wheels, but it also could scratch the clear coat or cause visible scratches on painted wheels.

The only time I've had to tow my car on a flatbed years ago, the tow driver was going to tie the wheels down exactly as the picture shown on OP's post. I asked him to try and secure the tires instead of the wheels to not cause damage to the wheels and he tied them down similar to what is shown in the picture below.

He didn't challenge me at all, and immediately changed the way he was going to tie the wheels down suggesting that he knew the method well, but I'm guessing it's easier to tie the wheels which is why he was first going to do it that way.

Good to know, if I'm unlucky enough to have another car flatbedded again!

So went back yesterday and talked to the SM. He said that BMW is well aware of the crank hub and they want to make sure that it isn’t the crank bolt didn’t come loose. He said it didn’t. It doesn’t make sense to me though that they want to remove the timing cover off to take a peak. So while I was trying to explain to my wife what were they doing I ran across an article where someone had something similar happened and ended up being the crank hub and he got the motor replaced. So let’s see what they say today.

On a positive note BMW didn’t have a loaner to give me right there at the moment so I enjoyed the 4 hours I had with a 2019 911 Carrera T.
