Exclamation Clicking/Ticking sound in engine? RESOLVED

UPDATE - SEE POST 11 AND 13
So I posted a poor quality video previously and figured I'd post a new video to show what triggers the sound and see if anybody has any ideas:

It will do this unless I start the car. It will NOT do this every time. It's random which makes it hard to diagnose

One buddy that works at BMW that saw the video suggested it's a DME relay or main power relay clicking but shouldn't be that loud.

I'm talking w/ the foreman tomorrow at BMW but want to see if anybody has any input. Thanks!

Does the engine crank fine when this is happening?

Does it sound like it's coming from the turbo side of the engine or the right side of the engine?

I know there are a few people that do experience this and others that don't. I have BMW investigating as I think everyone agrees it's way too loud if this is something that should occur.

It's on the turbo side. Sounds like it's coming from ECU/side of motor area, but not 100% sure.

Thing that I don't get is why it is random and will continue to occur when I open any doors/trunk/hood. Once car is started it won't occur again for some time. Very odd.

Ok, the turbo side is the left side of the engine, the DME/ECU side is the right side of the engine (when standing at the front of the car with the hood open looking toward the rear of the car).

If it's the turbo side, it's probably electronic wastegate servo motor related, but it can be other things.

Ah gotcha. I was thinking for some reason the ECU/DME was on pass side. Thanks for the heads up!

It is indeed turbo side to the best of my abilities to locate the sounds.

That's an interesting thought. Time will hopefully tell. Thanks for the input!

Did you go to bmw? What did they say?

I can also confirm mine is turbo side (passenger side). I noticed this noise at 600 miles on the car by the way.

Update:
Finally heard back from my BMW master tech. After providing the videos to him, he forwarded them on to his engineer contact who then forwarded it on to several others to have a look/listen. It appears to be the valvetronic motor and said he already ordered the parts and should be here next week. Job is suppose to take about two days to complete so I'll report back once I gather more information after the install.

Interesting. The Valvetronic stepper motor is inside the valve cover.

So I got my car back and thought I'd share about my experience. My Master Tech had made a call out to his engineer who put out a search to see if anybody else was dealing with my issue. As stated, it was identified that there was only one other car in the nation that was being serviced for the same exact thing. They took my car in on Wednesday the 14th and the car was just completed today. The valvetronic motor was having an electrical issue that was causing it to continue clicking as described in the video. Here are some pics of the process/part that was replaced for your viewing pleasure:

They are going to reach out to me after six weeks to see if there has been any issues.

Cost to repair had this not been under warranty: $2000

Moral of the story, if you have this happen, take a video so you can show them since it is so random on when it occurs and likely won't be duplicated.

Thank you for sharing this it is great info. I have heard intermittent clicking. However I can't confirm if it's the same sound as yours because I don't see the video you posted. Is anyone else not seeing it? All I see is one picture on the op.

Same issue on my M4, replaced valvetronic motor a few days ago. If anyone has this issue, doing a quick scan on ISTA will show a valvetronic motor code and should be easy to get dealer to replace it.
