Diff fluid confusion

Before someone says "This has been answered in other posts", I did do my research.
The question is what is the correct part number for the diff fluid in the F80 M3.

Real OEM states - 83-22-2-365-988, FINAL-DRIVE GEAR OIL, MSP/A SAE 75W-140

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...&q=83222365988

New TIS states - BMW MSP/A synthetic differential oil 83 22 9 405 462 1000 ml (Trade Unit)

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...-guide/1GdD0La

what I have seen here:
83-22-2-282-583 500 ml bottle SAE 75W-140 SAF-XJ+FM

What the dealer put in:
83-22-2-357-992, 1L bottle SAE 75W-140 SAF-XJ

This post states the FM booster was only for E-90 series: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1435577

So what is correct? I know BMW changes the part number for items in different size bottles, 500ml bottle is a different PN from the 1L bottle for the same stuff, but the main point would be do we need to use the stuff with the friction modifiers (+FM)?

SAF-XJ+FM

SAF-XJ is the correct fluid. Should come in a 1 liter bottle. bmw came out with a bulletin that says if the XJ+FM was put in a F8x diff and it failed they would not cover it as it is the wrong fluid.

What where did you see that??? Sounds like complete BS.

My dealership (and confirmed my local trusted Indy shop) told me our cars use the fm version (all recent M's do).

On another note, the fm stands for friction modifier and is simply an additive which keeps the noise level down on the diff. You would def not run afoul of the warranty by using the oem non fm version.

You can use what you want in the diff but I would stick to what BMW recommends. The XJ+FM has extra friction modifiers above what the normal XJ has in it, to eliminate noise from previous generation diffs during slow speed cornering where the clutch packs would chatter. Previous M diffs were mechanical engaged. The new M diffs don't have that problem as the clutch packs are applied on demand by an electric actuator.

M2, M3, M4 – INCORRECT FLUID USED TO REFILL THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL

MODEL
F80 (M3) F82, F83 (M4) F87 (M2)

situation
BMW quality monitoring of the MSport differentials being replaced under warranty discovered a significant number of these differentials failed because the incorrect fluid used during the 1,200 miles Maintenance Service.

In many cases, technicians replaced the fluid with wrong oil, SAF-XJ+FM Boosted oil (P/N 83 22 2 282 583), which is designed specifically ONLY to be used in the previous generation M3 (E90/E92/93) vehicles.

Consequently, reduced performance, premature wear and excessive noise complaints were experienced.

INFORMATION
For the M2 (F87), M3 (F80) and M4 (F82, F83) vehicles, ONLY use:

Synthetic MPS/A BMW Final Drive Gear Oil (PN 83 22 2 357 992, 1 liter) during a 1,200 ml. Maintenance Service or after a differential replacement.

warranty information
Warranty claims for 1,200 mile Maintenance Services and/or subsequent replacements of the MSport rear axle differential where the incorrect differential oil was use for refilling during the repair will be rejected and/or debited back to your center.

^^ Oh man. I'm about to schedule my 1200 mike service and this has the few hairs in the back of my neck standing up.

Not that I don't trust my dealer.....but I don't trust anyone.

Is there an official link or something where you found that? Most dealerships and reputable parts sites (like ecs tuning) say that the fm version is the recommended oem version to use.

Just checked my break-in service. SAF-XJ (no FM, part ending in 992) was used. Whew. Sounds like everyone should check! My other Ms use SAF-XJ+FM, so I would have guessed that for the F80...(obviously my older Ms have mechanical LSDs).

If I had a friend with an M4 and say he swapped whatever diff oil BMW used at the first service for standard Castrol SAF-XJ diff oil (without extra FM) he may have found (subjectively) that the diff seemed a little more aggressive at locking up....without any increase in noise.

matt123 I stand corrected. I contacted a few other parts departments with my vin and was given the part number for the non FM version.

I had just ordered the diff change kit from ECS tuning which calls for the +FM version to be used but I will now be returning it. Saved me from filling with the incorrect fluid and also a good deal of $ since the non FM version is much less expensive.

I wouldn’t worry if you put the fm in by mistake just change it out. I’m sure there are diffs out there with fm in them now that was put in by the dealer.

so it looks like PN 83 22 2 357 992 is the correct stuff.
Frustrating though that it takes this kind of effort to find that out.
I even had a dealer tell me he wouldn't give me the part number to the fluid as it is not their policy to give out part numbers...…

The F-ing part number is on the bottle if I came in and bought it - the fact that I am on the phone shouldn't make a diff (pun intended).

Yup I dont know why BMW has not been able to clearly indicate the proper fluids for this car. Even the whole engine oil weight debacle is strange with BMW recommending either 0w30, 5w30, or 0w40 in various different owner's manuals.
